Trouble TTC

Does RE Help with Male Infertility Issues?

I obviously haven't made my way to a RE yet and I know it would be helpful for me if I do in fact have PCOS.  However, I am wondering if RE's provide help for male infertility issues.  My husband had surgery for a varicocele a long time ago and we are now getting him a sperm analysis.  Does the RE deal with such issues for men too, or is it mostly focussed on women.  (Sorry if this is a dumb question!)

Re: Does RE Help with Male Infertility Issues?

  • Not a dumb question and the answer is yes, absolutely. Our only dx is MFI. PM me if you want more info!

  • In our case, I really don't feel like my RE has focused at all on MH even though our diagnosis is MFI.  I guess it's because there isn't anything that they can do for him at this point (he has seen a urologist and they didn't find anything), so the IUIs and making sure that everything is going well with me are addressing the issue the best they can I guess.

I'd say if YH's SA comes back and the news isn't great, I'd have him see a urologist that specializes in infertility and also the RE at the same time.  The RE may not be able to address his specific issues, but as a couple an RE helps you through the fertility process.

  • Thanks for the replies, ladies.  The different perspectives are interesting.  My DH is seeing his dr. Friday, so hopefully he can get tested and find out soon what his situation is before we meet with an RE.

  • Our RE actually specializes in male IF (she's trained in OB/Gyn and urology), but I know other RE's in the area send patients to urology for evaluation. Ultimately, whatever the cause of IF, the RE is the one who will get you pregnant (that sounds weird, but you know what I mean). They may just have someone else see DH to see if there is anything that can be done to increase sperm count.

  • Aside from doing the SA, reading results and telling DH to get on Ferility Blend for Men my RE has done nothing for DH's MFI dx.  BUT since we waited the three months and saw vast improvments with the pills for DH and the uro said there was nothing really he could do for DH, I don't think of it as my RE droppin' the ball.

Thankfully my RE said that of all the Dx, this is the one that's easiest to get me pregnant with.  Since we're not dealing with anything else (except low progesterone) he said that he feels extremely positive that we'll get KU off the first or second IUI.

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

  • From what I had heard, the RE will lots of times just refer the man to a urologist, so we decided to see a urologist first. We had our first appointment yesterday and once we get those results we will get a referral to the RE to finish my testing and get things moving toward IVF (unless the results change by some miracle).
