Do you feel guilty going to the gym?

My baby is 6 months.  I am trying to get (close) to my pre-preg body.  I work all day but feel guilty if I go to the gym and not spend time with my baby.  Does anyone else fell this way?  Any suggestions? The mommy and me classes are pretty expensive.  When it gets warm I plan on getting a jogging stroller.

Re: Do you feel guilty going to the gym?

  • Can you go in the morning before they wake up?  It is the only time I can go and actually stay on a consistent routine and not feel guilty.  My job is so spastic, that I can plan to go in the evenings, but it never works out and I wasn't staying in a routine.  I found a bootcamp for women from 5:30 - 6:30am and I love it.  It is nice because I am done with working out by 6:30 and can still be at work by 8am and haven't missed anytime with the kids.  I have been going consistently since May (even now) and then run outside/at the gym on the weekends, during nap time.  Yeah, I miss the sleep, but there is no other time to do it.

The other thing I do in the summer is the double jogging stroller with the boys and they love it!  Easier when the weather is warmer and days are longer :)

  • I didn't really get to the point of feeling guilty. When I went back to work I realized I could go to the gym at 7pm when she went to sleep and not have to lose out on any of our time in the evening together.  On the weekend I would go during her nap time.  The downside was/is not being able to go to the classes I loved, but it's a schedule that I've felt good about since day 1.

  • Thanks ladies!  I guess the key is during sleep time to work out.  After reading your comments I decided to suck it up and join a 24hr gym.   She goes to bed at 8-8:30, so I think I will just go at 5:30 in the morning.
  • Sadly, NO! I love DS more than anything, but I'm sorry, Mama's gotta get her body back!

This is already what I'm feeling. Although I was underweight prepregnancy, I'm worried that at 20weeks I've gained 13 lbs already. My doctor has no concerns at all but I definitely want to get my body back after the baby.

I put on just about 50lbs! Nightmare! Not to mention, the week before DS was born, I had put on 6lbs in a week. I feel like it has taken forever to come off, so at this point, I'm determined. When LO comes, don't feel bad! IMO, an hour or two a day isn't going to hurt anyone.

  • Have you thought about working out at home. There are some great programs out there, P90x, Insanity, chalene Extreme, Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire and many more that you can see some great results with. When I first had my daughter who is now three I tried and tried to get to the gym but after working all day I just lost my motivation to get back out to the gym so I tried  getting up at 5 am to get to the gym but I found I was just rushing my work out. Finally when I tried some of these programs I found it so easy to commit. I only had to walk out into my living room. Now my after having my son, who is three months old,  I just put him in his swing and he watches me while I work out or he falls asleep. I will be going back to work soon and I am hoping I can stick with it. I think for all working moms it is such a challenge to find the balance but so important to take care of yourself. Good Luck!
