We are planning on taking Jake to the beach over the winter. I usually bring an umbrella but I think I need a tent for his fair skin. Anything else essentail that you must bring to the beach with a 6month old?

We had a baby one that was basically useless because we could never get it folded back up and into the carrying case.
Last summer our Costco had these AWESOME huge beach umbrellas that had flaps that anchored with tent stakes.
We got one of those and have used it SO much.
We use it for sun cover for our albino clan and have used it for rain during soccer games. I can see us using it for years to come
ETA: here's a link and a pic BUT... we paid $35 for ours at Costco - not $90!!

We have this one:

I got it at BRU. I read the reviews after we bought it and was nervous but we ended up being very happy with it. It's very easy to put together and take down. It held in the sand well and covered baby nicely. There was room enough for me to partially go in with her too.
We have the same one. It is nothing fancy, but it works! I like that I can get in with her too - it is big enough for me to sit cross-legged (I am super short, but still!). Now that Lucy is mobile, I think it will be great because there is plenty of room for her to have tons of toys when she needs a break from the sun.
We have this one too, but DS HATED it. We used it once when he was about 6 months old, and he screamed the whole time he was in it - but he is a kid that needs to see everything and know what is going on. He couldn't see the other people well while sitting in the tent.
Since then, we have just used a regular beach umbrella, and that works just fine. This summer, DD just laid down on a blanket under the umbrella.
We have learned, however, that neither kid will tolerate being on the beach for longer than about 1.5 hours...and we never have big expectations for any trip - when they are getting cranky/antsy, we go home.
Good luck!
We have two of these, to share with my parents. We used them over the summer when my guys were almost 5 months, and they were easy to set up... but I seem to remember we had some confusion the first time. Anyway, we also got them at Costco.
