Superaunt's post got my curious about how other LO's start letting you know that they need a change. Mikey makes a stinky face - a la Sydney - and pats his butt.
He's only been doing it for the last month or so, so Margaux's probably thisclose to doing it.
On another note, he says "butt" sometimes when he's patting his butt and I worry that all this time I should have been saying something like "do you need a new bottom?" instead of "do you need a new butt?"
He will tell us "poo-poo" and pull at his bum or if we ask him if he went, he looks away guiltily and doesn't answer or says "yeah." It's not a sure thing but he does that easily 80% of the time after he's gone. Not to the point of anticipation yet.
You totally know when Aaron is pooping?he goes into a corner and turns red. LOL. Sometimes he'll say "durdy" when I ask him if he has a dirty diaper. He'll also pull at his pants (butt area).

That's what I've been waiting for. I can often tell when he's pooping(standing in the corner grunting seems to be a theme), can never tell when he's peeing and still have no idea when he needs to do either. But I figure letting me know before the stink gets to me is progress

He'll also say Uh-oh or Pew.
I like uh oh, but prefer pew. Uh oh is one of M's favorite things to say so we'd have a ton of false alarms if that was one of his dirty diaper alerts.
I almost spit my coffee on my lap top when I saw that! Too funny Heather! That you used Sydney's "smell this" face to describe it. She still does that, you know? She wants everyone to smell everything. Her toys, her blocks, her feet, her snacks. It is hysterical.
I *wish* she would make that face to let me know when she poops! It used to be that you would see her face (turning red) and KNOW she was pooping. Not anymore. She has been stealthy lately. She can be right next to you and you don't know it. And you can't smell it. She has gotten a rash twice in the last two weeks because she pooped four or five times in a day and "didn't tell me". You just get a surprise when you go to change a wet diaper.

Ha! Uh-oh is def. a favorite in our house too. Sometimes it almost becomes a little song "uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh"
Mine never said or indicated a thing about her diaper until 2.5. I consider all of you with kids that communicate very lucky. Maybe they will be early potty trainers too. Fingers crossed for you!

This, but I always know when he's pooping because he squats and grunts and sometimes turns red. He just doesn't seem to care though and doesn't express an interest in being changed. He still poops 3-4 times a day.
Sometimes she tells me poopie or peepee. Other times not. Everyday I try to keep her diaper-less for about an hour. I do it expecially if I see she is a little red down there. I keep her shirt/onesie on & socks to keep her warm. I put the potty in the living room & if I put a show on, I can usually get her to sit on it for the duration of the show. I need to time it better though. I know she usually poops after her morning bottle, usually between 8:30 - 9:30.
The other day she was playing & I am watching her & see she is starting to sprinkle a little, she jumps & says peepee & runs off the blanket on the floor. She stopped peeing while running & I quickly put her on the potty & she finished. Later she sqautted down & was looking at me funny, I said do you have to poopie & just as I sat her on potty, plop out it came.

Damn where were you when I posted this on the 12-24 board and everyone said they didn't do that...I felt like a freak for being the only one who does an hour a day of diaper-free time! And that's how I do it too, except usually he wears fuzzy slippers and a long-sleeved t-shirt. It wouldn't be a good look on DH but Simon pulls it off...

When I notice she's "working on something" I ask her if she's pooping, then say "Oh, yeah, you're totally pooping. Pooping, pooping Margaux."
If I just smell the results of her efforts, I ask her if she has poop. I think when she starts talking I know the words she'll use...

Unfortunately, it's when the smell overpowers the house that I ask him "Did you poopoo?" and he starts running to his room for a diaper change. LOL
Now if I could only make him tell me before he poopoo's.
