Sonogram vs Ultrasound

I'm just curious if it is a generational thing or regional thing? It seems people my age say u/s and my parents/gp say sonogram. It's early and I'm already bored, thats all

Everyone at my RE's always called it an ultrasound, so now I'm in the habit of calling it an ultrasound. My mom always says sonogram though!

We say ultrasound, but we'll sometimes say sonogram because it's the term that, at least for me, I grew up hearing in relation to seeing baby.

I think it's definitely a generational thing. My mom calls it a sonogram...LOL.

From my understanding a sonogram is the actually proceedure, ultrasound is the technology used.

o and has anyone ever heard someone say "sonometer" instead of "centimeter"? my MIL says sonometer (even though she is a nurse) all the time. i don't really care for her so i like to say it's because she's a ditz.

It's probably a generational thing - everytime I see my MIL she asks if I've had a sonogram. We then explain to her that we get weekly ultrasounds - that leads to having to explain what an u/s is and how they're the same.

I thought the sonogram was the result of an ultrasound (the picture). *shrugs*
