Sonogram vs Ultrasound

I'm just curious if it is a generational thing or regional thing? It seems people my age say u/s and my parents/gp say sonogram. It's early and I'm already bored, thats all :)

Re: Sonogram vs Ultrasound

  • Everyone at my RE's always called it an ultrasound, so now I'm in the habit of calling it an ultrasound. My mom always says sonogram though!

    SURPRISE! Here comes #3!
  • We say ultrasound, but we'll sometimes say sonogram because it's the term that, at least for me, I grew up hearing in relation to seeing baby.

  • I think it's definitely a generational thing. My mom calls it a sonogram...LOL.
  • From my understanding a sonogram is the actually proceedure, ultrasound is the technology used.

  • o and has anyone ever heard someone say "sonometer" instead of "centimeter"? my MIL says sonometer (even though she is a nurse) all the time. i don't really care for her so i like to say it's because she's a ditz.
  • It's probably a generational thing - everytime I see my MIL she asks if I've had a sonogram. We then explain to her that we get weekly ultrasounds - that leads to having to explain what an u/s is and how they're the same.

    Oy vey! *faceplam*

  • I thought the sonogram was the result of an ultrasound (the picture). *shrugs*
