Is Ricky Gervais suppose to be funny?

Because so far, I'm hearing crickets from the audience.

This is why I don't watch awards shows, but there's nothing else on until the Simpsons.

    It's a British humor thing, absolutely.  My Irish BIL thinks he's hilarious.  I have a dry sense of humor and find him funny sometimes but not all the time.  But Hollywood and the critics loves him and that's who the award shows really cater to.

    I think he's one of the funniest men out there. He made me laugh quite a few times during the show...but then again I'm British. Although my husband enjoys him as well.
