Success after IF

Would you have gone to the Golden Globes?

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this - Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban going to the Golden Globes when their daughter was 2 weeks old.

At 2 weeks, you couldn't pry my arms away from either of my kids.  I'm still so surprised they did.  To each his own- and I like both of them - I'm just surprised.  There are times that you have to leave newborns- ill relatives, work, etc.  I'm sure some people will say that the Globes were work for Nicole b/c she was nominated for an award.  However, many people skip the awards show - Laura Linney won and she wasn't there (for example).  Having a baby is a reason people would understand for skipping the event.

I know she isn't dealing with the physical aspect of having a baby b/c they used a surrogate and I'm sure they have a full time baby nurse, but they either had to fly with a newborn or leave her at home 2000 miles away.  Both sound crazy to me as a new mom when it's not absolutely necessary for work/illness.

Anyone else have thoughts?  Would you have gone to the event in their situation?

Re: Would you have gone to the Golden Globes?

  • No, but that is me.  I know people who have left their child - even a newborn.  I don't want to judge, but for me, I couldn't do it because breastfeeding is hard to do and important to ME and not really do-able without the baby that early (my opinion).  I know she isn't BFing, but still I would find it hard.  My daughter is 4.5 m and I wouldn't leave her to go across the country.  I may have to travel with work and if that is the case, she will go with me.  But my husband says that celebrities have many nannies....so if I was that rich, I could probably do more.  Or i had a support group - meaning family around to help and I wasn't breastfeeding.

  • I put other because I really have no idea.  Their living and work situations are just SO different from mine.  They might've flown to LA at noon on Sunday and taken the red-eye home, all while the baby was with her full-time caretaker.  Plus, it IS work for her (and him).  Yes, she could've stayed home, but it might not have been a wise career move.  I also think it's a little different for someone who, for better or worse, will be away from her children for long periods of time throughout their life.  It's just a different mindset.

If it were me, I wouldn't go.  But my world is so different from theirs.  I don't judge at all.

  • If I were her, no, I wouldn't go.  Because I'm Nicole Kidman and i've been to the Golden Globes a million times and I will have a million more opportunities to go before I die.

If I were me, then yes, I would totally go.  Because I have never been and I prob will never have the opportunity again.

I 100% agree with this.  Well said Amber!

  • I personally wouldn't. FWIW, I ran into them out at dinner together (just the two of then) a couple of days after they brought Sunday Rose home from the hospital, so they had no problem leaving her with a caregiver at a very, very young age, also. Different strokes for different folks. Me? I was glued to my baby for a while. I distinctly remember posting here when he was about 10 days old asking everyone if they thought it was ok for me to leave him with DH for a half hour so I could run to the grocery store.
  • I would, we went to the Kentucky Derby when DS was about 4-5 weeks old and it was just for fun, not for work or anything.  We just always go and have a great time.  They probably flew with the baby and many nannies on a private plane.
