3rd Trimester

Maternity support belts

My physical therapist is really on me to get one....My only thought is, they are for when you are standing up and walking.....I have a desk job....the ONLY time I get up is to take a bathroom break, and if I end up going out to lunch.  When I go to the stores, I get the motorized scooters since it is extremely painful to walk.

Anyone had any success with them?  Which ones worked and which ones were a waste of money?  She's trying to get me to buy a $100 one that goes up over my shoulders and everything...I'm not so into that idea.

At this point, I could either buy the support belt or take birthing/infant care classes.  Trying to figure out which I will benefit more from.

  • My doctor is also trying to get me to buy the support belt that goes over your shoulders. I just can't bring myself to spend the money when I have so much other stuff to take care of at this point. Just how I feel about it though.

  • fwiw, I didn't take any birthing/infant care classes. They go over a ton of stuff with you in the hospital. If it's really that painful to walk, I probably would buy the belt. You still have over 8 weeks to go. Do you really want to be on bedrest or feel uncomfortable that entire time?

  • My doctor wants me to get a support belt also.  He didn't say I needed the one that goes over my shoulders tho.  I sit at a desk too and my back has been killing me however it seems to be fine when I walk.  I try to sit up straight but it's hard.  I would also like to know which belts are recommended and if they help or not.
  • I have had horrid pelvic issues since about 36 weeks.  I wasn't able to walk well, put my socks and pants on, get in and out of the car or bed.  I broke down and bought a cheapie one at BRU last Friday.  It doesn't go over the shoulders.  My pain is essentially gone.  It's been awesome and I'm surprised at how well it works.

That's why I'm asking....I don't want to be in pain, but I don't have any experience with how effective they are.  If the cheaper versions work almost as good as the pricey ones, I would hopefully then be able to get a support belt and go to a class or two.

  • I have one of the basic ones, purchased at Sears for $18.  I love it.  I went from not being able to lift my left leg to almost no pain.  This is my third pregnancy and I have used one with each baby.  I used the more expensive ones with the last baby and I don't see much difference.
  • I have one without shoulder straps that I bought just to relieve some pelvic pressure because of varicose veins. It was $14 on Amazon and has worked well. It's the Prenatal Cradle version.
