3rd Trimester

2nd+ moms...uterine cramping after delivery ?

Is anyone else dreading this?  I hadn't really thought about it until I heard the mom on Bringing Home Baby talking about it.  Apparently it gets worse with each pregnancy.  And I thought it hurt with DS...so I guess I have a lot of cramping to look forward to this time.

  • It definitely hurt worse the second time around for me.  I assumed that it was because it was my second c-section in 16 months so I had (not so) old scar tissue and a brand new incision but maybe they are just worse with each pregnancy.  Massaging the muscles really helped me, my mom was the one who suggested it and at first I was reluctant because it sounded like it would be even more painful but it really does help.  I think it relaxes the muscles a little and also gets the stuff moving out!

  • I didn't really experience much uterine cramping after dd#1 (however I had some post partum hemorraging issues, so that's probably why!)

Did both you girls bf with your first babies?  I bottlefed with dd#1 which is why I think I probably didn't have so much cramping & my uterus didn't really shrink back to what it should have.  I'm hoping to actually have cramping this time to alleviate any post-partum hemmorage that may or may not occur again...kind of getting anxiety about it actually!

  • My cousin just had her second a few months ago, and she said it was much worse the second time around.  Either it was worse, or she didn't remember it hurting so much with the first one.

She said other then that everything else was much better/easier with the second.  I guess that's the tradeoff :)

  • Yes, I did bf...and it was mainly when I was bfing that it hurt so bad.  Like some of the worst cramps I've ever had!  But I also didn't have any good pain meds after delivery, just some Motrin, maybe if I had something stronger I wouldn't have noticed it much.

I had horrible after-pains with my DD, and I'm definitely nervous about it.  I only used ibuprofen last time--this time I'm definitely getting the good drugs :)

  • My OB forewarned me that a lot of first time moms don't even experience the cramping but that the 2nd time it's one of the few things that is worse.

  • Oh man! That is what I dread the most about the whole thing! Mine hurt like crazy!! I had a CS and was breastfeeding, which causes contracting, which hurt like mad for the first 3 days or so. I sure hope they don't get worse each time :( I might just cry.
  • Ugh yeah, not fun!!

  • Yep, at times the cramps during breastfeeding my 2nd baby were worse than labor.  I'm anticipating it to be even worse.  My friend has 9 kids (yes nine) and she said they are worse each time.  Don't be a hero - take the pain killers.
  • I had cramping when I breastfed but it wasn't bad.  More like annoying twinges.  I've also heard it's worse the second time around but I'm choosing to live in denial about things like that. :)

  • They were worse for me, especially right after delivery during that first nursing session.

  • Mine wasn't that much worse with #2 than with #1.  It only really hurt when I nursed.
  • I had a totally unmedicated labour but asked for something as soon as I started nursing because the pain was so bad. Tongue Tied I`m planning on having some morphine during this labour in hopes that there`s still a little in my system to ease the after birth pains.

Like most things in life, you can choose how to look at pain... I looked at it as a "good" thing!  You want it to shrink back to close to pre-preg size.  I BF'd DD and I definitely felt them for a few days whenever she was nursing.  After a few days, I didn't feel them anymore.
