If you don't mind sharing, how much did you pay per slice of cake? I can't remember what we paid, I thought it was around $1.75 a slice in 2006 (we had a 4 tier cake, bottom layer was fake). SIL is getting married and was planning to use a good friend's mom to make it until she quoted her $3.50 a slice. Is that the going rate these days? I almost had a heart attack!
FYI-she doesn't mind paying full price for the cake and isn't expecting a discount, but this lady doesn't even have an established business, she just does it on the side from time to time -- maybe that's the norm these days, I don't know, she was going off of what I told her around $1.75 a slice
Re: Recently Married Ladies ?
I just went back through my stuff and saw that we paid $4/serving, which included delivery/setup and the "hardware" in the cake (like the plates between the layers).
My baker started at $3.25/slice for basic cakes, custom-designed of course.
In Sept 2008, we paid $1.74/slice (averaged out). The tiered cake (served 162) was $2.50/slice and the sheet cake (served 100) was $0.50/slice. This included delivery/stand, etc. The sheet cake was spice cake w/ apple pie filling, the bottom tier was cheesecake, the upper tiers were white cake with either buttercream or strawberry (depending on the tier).
Yeah, we did something similar. We paid for the "fancy" cake for 85 people, and then had a sheet cake for the remaining 100ish.
It depends who you go with, the design, flavor, and fillings.
Mine averaged out to $4 a slice, but one cake had 2 fillings (butter cake with white chocolate mousse and caramel) and the other was spice cake (the free seasonal flavor with cream cheese filling). I paid extra to get a damask design on 2 of the layers. That was with 4 layer cake and 1 sheet cake and factoring in the delivery fee. If you don't have fillings, 2.50-3 is more normal. People raved about my cake and it was worth it to me--and honestly saving 50 cents or $1 on a 200 person wedding is nothing in the cost of the wedding ($100-200).
