I'm starting to second guess if we should rely on our anatomy scan's gender result from yesterday and I'm curious if this was everyone's experience:
As soon as we got there we told the tech that we wanted to know the gender. The tech said right away, "I'll try my best but sometimes they are stubborn and we aren't able to tell." Fair enough I thought.
10 minutes into her taking pictures (some shots she told us what we were looking at, others she didn't), my husband asked, "So have you seen anything yet that would tell you if we're having a boy or girl?" To which she replied, "from what I've seen so far, I'd say it's a girl, and I see a lot of these pictures."
Ok so we were set! So then I said, "ok so it's definitely a girl!" and she said, "well we'd never say definitely, you can never be sure until the baby comes out what the sex is." So I start getting annoyed and say, "yeah, but you're sure enough that we can start buying girl-ish bedding and things." And she said something to the effect of, "from what I've seen I'd say girl but you never know."
I kept thinking she'd look at more pictures to give us a more definite answer but she never did. At the end, I said "are you still thinking it's a girl", and she said "yes but again we NEVER say for certain because of liability." And I asked if she could give me a percentage, like is she 90% sure, and she said they don't give percentages.
!!!! Yesterday I went with it, from some of the people I talked to about it, they said that's normal, but now as I go to start buying bedding and stuff, I'm hesitant.
Was this your experience or would you go back for a second opinion? I'm waiting for my doctor to call with the results of the scan (although the tech said everything looked good) and I'm going to talk to him about it, but in the meantime I'm curious. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it. I just want to know for sure!
Re: Those that already know the gender - PLEASE COME IN
At my anatomy scan, I also had a tech that had that uncertainty in her voice. She did however tell me that she was 90% sure that it was a girl and she was writing it in my chart as such. She also told me she'd fit me in if I came back on a Tues or Thurs. (the tech is inside my doc's office.) Well, that next Thursday I had an appt so I asked if she could check again for me and she did. We are now certain that we are having a girl.
It's frustrating when they have that uncertain tone. I definitely know how you feel! I didn't buy a single thing in that 2 weeks between my ultrasounds, because I wasn't sure.
Is there any way you can get another u/s or pay for an elective to be sure??
I'm so sorry that she wasn't more definitive in her answers. I know they are just covering ass but it still stinks
Oh and we also didn't get a really good picture at our first u/s either. That was the biggest thing for me. I needed to see those 3 lines!
It's never a FOR SURE thing. Our tech also gave the "let me know if I was wrong" disclaimer.
That said, we saw a pretty prominent penis. I'd be shocked if she was wrong.

Thats very normal. Our tech told us that we would be ok buying girl things, but keep the tags on.
With DS, even at 35 weeks with a very obvious penis they wouldn't tell us 100%. Its annoying but they have to cover their butts too.
Congrats on your girl!
Our US tech wouldnt even say the word boy.
She said "do you see those two little bumps with the thing sticking up in the middle? DO with that info what you will". Thats all we got.

Unfortunately no, we didn't get any money shots printed out. From what the tech said, I'm guessing she saw those shots and just didn't point them out
Not a very good tech!
The doctor did just call though with the results of the anatomy scan and said everythign looked perfectly healthy (much more important!) and I told her about our experience, and asked her if that was normal, or if that could mean that the tech jsut didn't see anything definitive. The doctor said right away that that was a completely normal experience, and that we wouldn't have heard anything more definitive than that. The doctor also said that no matter what is said during the ultrasound she would NEVER advise going with pink or blue for big things that you can't return.
This is obviously a very conservative office I'm dealing with
But at least that tells me that this is the most I'm going to hear, that going back for a second ultrasound won't make a difference. I'm thinking we'll have another one at some point and we'll just check again I guess.

I had the almost exact situation happen to me yesterday. I am 16 weeks and wasn't sure we would even be able to know. When at the appointment the tech was very nice in saying that she believes it is a girl. She told me not to take any tags off or lose receipts but it was mostly positive. Now I've been spending my day seeing how much I can find on the mistakes that can happen when gender is discovered at 16 weeks. The one thing I found is that it seems more mistakes happen when a girl is predicted and it turns out to be a boy.
I just would like that little bit more of reassurance, which I'm sure you all understand. I have another scan at 20 weeks, I just wish I didn't have this doubt. It's not the end of the world so I'm sure I can wait and feel better after 20 weeks.
Thanks for listening
I am having a girl and the tech got a really good shot showing that it was a girl. You can see the little lines and her legs were positioned perfectly. At the end of the ultrasound, I asked the ultrasound tech to double check just to be sure and we saw the lines again. I asked if she was sure and she said, "We can never say 100% but from the looks of this picture, I would be shocked if it wasn't a girl." I totally agree with her too.
Our u/s tech said "oh yeah, definitely a boy" but he was super active and there were multiple times we could all tell he was definitely a little boy. we got really clear pictures too.
I think techs are always more hesitant with girls because boys are easier to identify. I'm sure your experience is normal.
If you eat right before an u/s usually the baby is more active and you'll have more chances to see!
I second what others have said: if you really want to know in advance, it might be worth it to pay out of pocket to have an elective gender screening at another facility. I haven't had one myself, but loads of people here get them (it seems) and are usually happy with the results. I know one office in my area even has a policy that if the baby doesn't cooperate during your initial visit, you can come back for free until the sex is determined.
We are team blue, and we had our NT scan and our anatomy scan at the same office (not at my midwife's office). At our NT scan, the tech was very friendly and gave us an early guess on the sex (she guessed boy). At the anatomy scan, after seeing that everything was developing properly, I asked the tech and she searched around for a while and the baby wasn't cooperating so well. She went back to her desk to handle some of the paperwork and told me to move around a little to see if I could get him to change positions, and then she tried it again. It worked, and this time we saw boy parts (without question). Even then, she said "it looks like a boy" but obviously she can't make any guarantees.
Congratulations on your little girl! If you're still unsatisfied, try an elective sex scan. I really doubt that your tech's tone of doubt is indicative of anything other than her need to cover the practice's butt.

I was just hestitant to be set at 20 weeks on the sex of my child, but I figure 24 weeks is far enough along to tell. Also, a woman was helping find my way out of the hospital, and asked what I was haivng. I told her I was having a girl, and she said well little boys testicles could drop later. I wanted to ask her if his penis was invisible until then too, but I just said okay, thanks. lol.
They can never tell you 100% until the see the baby. If you are that concerned, you can have an elective u/s at a private facility to double check the gender.
That being said, u/s technology has come a long way and I am sure you can buy your girly clothes in confidence!
My U/S tech was the same way. There was no mistaking the 3 lines, we even got 2 pictures of my girl's girl parts as well.
