I also posted this on the Indiana nest board, but that board seems pretty dead... so I hope you don't mind me double posting here!
MH is looking into a few different schools for PhD work, and right now Notre Dame is one of our front-runners - but we are very early in the process. He finishes his Masters this spring and plans to take a year off prior to PhD, so we're looking at fall 2012 enrollment.
We are looking at visiting ND sometime this spring and I'm looking for any advice or words of wisdom from anyone in the area. Things to be sure to do/see, where to stay, etc. Also looking for any words of wisdom from ND alums, etc.
Thanks in advance!
Re: XP: visiting Notre Dame
Those of us that completed our undergraduate work there would certainly say something similar (I think, at least) - that it's an amazing place that has a sense of community like no other university.
There are a LOT more options for living now than there was when I was there, so I imagine you wouldn't have a problem finding housing. As far as a place to stay while you're visiting, my only advice would be to stay far away from the Holiday Inn downtown South Bend. It's awful.
How long will you be in town? There isn't a ton to do/see in the area. The College Football Hall of Fame is there, but it's really not that exciting.
GL!
Definitely will echo Lauren's sentiment that the sense of community at ND is really what makes it so special.
There is a lot of new development and housing in the South Bend area so finding somewhere to live shouldn't be too difficult, I think.
As for where to stay, depending on how much $$ you want to spend, the Inn at St Mary's is really really nice and the Ivy Court Inn & Suites behind ND is also really nice. They've just recently added a lot of new shops and restaurants right by campus and I'm pretty sure there is a new Fairfield Inn there as well. The only thing closer than those three is the Morris Inn which is right on campus. Also pretty pricey, I think.
A fun place to eat is Tippecanoe Place. It used to be the Studebaker's mansion and has been converted into a restaurant. I'd probably go for lunch because dinner is pricey, but it's a lot of fun to walk around.
Any more questions, let us know! Enjoy your trip!
We're from the area and I'm a Saint Mary's alum. We have friends right now who live in family housing while my friend's DH is going to law school. They seem to really enjoy it. While the housing seems like it leaves much to be desired, I am jealous that she gets to be surrounded by families in similar life situations. There is even a community center that has a GREAT little play area for kids. Be sure to check that out!
There are lots of hotels that you can probably get for a reasonable price down the road in Mishawaka. You will also find lots of chain restaurants down by the hotels and the mall. We stayed at the Inn of Saint Mary's once and absolutely loved it although it was a little pricey.
Have a great time visiting!
