Question about IVF Timing/Calendar

I should know these things but its been two years since our IVF #1 and I forgot how it all worked.  I just had an IUI Sunday so it feels a little soon  to call my RE and start planning the next cycle.  I'd like to start IVF #2 with my next cycle.  But I need to avoid having any monitoring appts more ER the first week of March since my sub for work will be on vacation and I won't be able to get any time off.  So here are my questions.....

Do all protocols require BCP or Lupron the cycle before stims?  How long did you take BCPs for?  A full cycle?  Could I do 2 weeks of BCPs or 5 weeks so that we could time it after that week?  Or will I need to take a break cycle?  I'm mostly wondering about how long I will need to be on BCP before starting stims.

I was on BCP from December 2nd-28th. They extended my time on them because the lab was closed for a few days at the end of December for deep cleaning. So they were able to manipulate my cycle to work around that. I took a full pack of the active pills and then like 3 active pills of a new pack (skipping the placebo pills).

Do all protocols require BCP or Lupron the cycle before stims?  No, just depends on your RE

How long did you take BCPs for?  32 days, because the clinic I needed to go to for my ER and ET was going to be closed from Christmas to after New Years, so my pills were extended

A full cycle?  Yes, plus a few days

Could I do 2 weeks of BCPs or 5 weeks so that we could time it after that week?  You can discuss extending BCP, if you will be taking them, with your RE

Or will I need to take a break cycle?  You will have to check with your RE and their protocols

    Good luck to you!!!!

  • I was on BCPs for a little less than 3 weeks but started Lupron about 5 days before taking my last BCP. Every RE is different but I'm sure if you talk to them about your schedule, they can work something out. I had told my RE that "if possible" I needed to avoid being out for ER or ET the 1st week of a month ( I'm an accountant). She took that into consideration to determine when to start everything.

  • I was on BCP for 21 days but I agree with the other ladies that you can shorten or extend the time you are on the pill. Just have to work with your RE. I would assume they would rather you be on the pill for longer rather than shorter to 'quiet' your ovaries, especially since you are coming off of an IUI cycle.

I did BCP for my first IVF and it screwed with my cycle so my RE didn't require it for IVF#2. My period was delayed, but it came naturally so I was happy about that.

The first time, I took BCP for 28 days. I think your RE could manipulate your BCPs to suit your schedule.
