Microform Cleft Lip? (a little long)

Has anyone had their LO diagnosed with this? When DD was born I noticed right away that her little nostrils were different shapes and that her upper lip looked like it had a little scar on it (she is a beauty anyways!). We asked the pedi about it, but he said she was fine, no problems. But the more I look into it, the more I think she may have this minor birth defect. Basically, based on my internet research, a microfrom cleft lip is a cleft lip/palate that healed itself in the womb. The result is a "scar" on the upper lip...for reference, Joaquin Phoenix has one. Anyways - I have read that sometimes these require surgery - and sometimes people choose surgery for cosmetic reasons. We are going to talk with our doctor again, and get a second opinion, but I was just wondering if anyone on this board has had this diagnosis and has any advice?? Here is a picture (hopefully it works). It really is very minor, but you can see the "scar" on the upper lip and the difference in her nostrils. I have read that sometimes there are speech problems and dental problems associated with the condition - so that is why I am looking for advice. TIA!image

Re: Microform Cleft Lip? (a little long)

  • It's hard to see the difference in her nostrils in the pic, but yeah the scar definitely looks like what I "googled" as microform cleft lip.  Does your insurance require referrals?  I would def bring it up to your pedi and mention it as a "microform cleft lip" not just a regular cleft lip/palate.  I don't know how common/rare it is, but there is no way I would just take a pedi's "she's fine" as an answer.  You are right in seeking a second opinion.  Can you call the hospital you delivered at to see if they have a craniofacial team that specializes in this?  I would start at all the hospitals in your area to find a doc.  Then get an appointment.  More than likely it's just cosmetic, but I would still want them to look at it.  Good luck! She is precious :)

Thanks for your encouragement! It is hard to confront a doctor and tell them you think they are wrong, but that is what I need to do. I am glad others agree with me on what it look like. Thanks again!
