Parenting after 35

communicating w/ a 1 year old

man have i been having fun this weekend (off today for MLK day). and i'm being serious. i can't believe how worked up i was about Sabrina getting older and whatnot- this is by far the funnest stage so far. she's just sooooo enjoyable to be around that i don't understand why daycare charges us what they do! ;)

*she brings books to me all the time (been doing this for months) to read to her- only now she'll actually say "Can you read this?" (at least that's my translation- ha!)

*she loves her baby doll and totes it around w/ her everywhere- and understands what we say when we ask her about it and remembers where she left it during the rare times it's not right by her side!

*she comes to me after she's pooped so that i can change her

*she goes to her bedroom to be changed (as long as it's really needed) when i say "Come on, lets change your diaper"

*when i ask if she's hungry or if she wants something to eat and she answers "mmmmm", she goes to the kitchen and waits to be lifted into her high chair

*if she's playing by herself, she'll come to me when she's tired (rubs her eyes) or hungry (opens and closes her mouth or says "mmmm")

*she understands soooo much and will reply in her own way and as long as i'm paying attention, it all makes clear sense

i know this is all common every day things that kids do or learn to do but it's just SO FREAKING AWESOME to experience it first hand and be such an important part of it!

  • It is so amazing isn't it? I cannot believe how much Gracie understands since she has turned one!

  •   I bet when you work & then get some time off you appreciate your LO's all the more. I bet it's gona break your heart to go back. But in the meantime enjoy every second.

Around one year is definitely a turning point where they become little people. It just seems like yesterday that Sienna was just a little blob kicking her hands & feet. It is SO amazing how much they learn all of a sudden & how fast. I wish I was keeping a blog because every day it's something new. She totally gets everything I say & communicates so well.

  • It's funny that you are saying how fun it is... I was going to post that the best is yet to come!  I know her turning 1 was bittersweet (it was for me, too), but this is just the absolute coolest time!  They are learning so fast, it's hard to keep up.  Caleb said he wanted a "fwen fwy" (french fry) today, and I didn't even know he could say that yet!

  • I know. It is crazy how simple the things are that they are learning - yet they are monumental. I keep saying please and thank you to her hoping it will just be second nature. Even though she only says a handful of words, she understands everything we say. She could be totally engrossed in playing and I could be talking to my MIL about how she had her hair up earlier and she will touch and pat her head without missing a beat.

  • I completely understand and Aaron did/does a lot of the same things as Sabrina. It's so amazing how they can communicate and how it changes day by day.

I need to write this down more, like you did.

  • I know what you mean. I know that the fact that my child can make a "more" sign and say, "mo, mo" doesn't make her some sort of wunderkind, but I am so amazed by it that I want to tell the whole world. It's just so nice to finally being able to get a glimpse at what is happening in their heads.
