3rd Trimester

Anyone up? Labor question...

If anyone is up I have a labor question. I went to sleep and woke up to a pain in my tummy and it felt like a pop, almost like a ligament or muscle or something. I went to the bathroom and noticed my underwear was damp but not soaked. I put on a new pair and went back to bed. I started having contractions (I think this is them, they def. feel different than anything else I've felt so far... they tighten my whole stomach and are painful) right now they are anywhere from 10-15 minutes apart.

My undies are really damp again but I am not feeling any gushing or trickle...

Any ideas? I don't want to wake DH up or call the dr just yet because I don't know for sure what this is. Plus if I woke DH up he would never go back to sleep and neither would I.

I am drinking a bunch of water to see if that stops them... I don't want to go to L&D and be sent home for a false alarm!

Re: Anyone up? Labor question...

  • Sometimes it can be such a slow leak (when your water breaks) that it just dampens your underwear a bit. You might call the hospital and ask if you could stay home and labor for a few hours... see what the max time is that you could stay home. They might ask for you to come in to check you. Sometimes you have to go into L&D a few times for false alarms before the real thing. Better safe than sorry, right?

  • I would call L&D and tell them you might have a slow leak.  If the contractions get strong enough to where they take your breath away or can't talk through them, then you know that's a real one and you need to start thinking about getting to the hospital.  When I was having strong ones, L&D told me to wait it out if possible to where they are under 5 minutes apart.  I tried to do that and take a shower but I couldn't wait any longer and we went in.
  • Ok, so I haven't been through it before, but if I were you I would wait a little longer and see if they intensify or get closer together. If it makes you feel better, call and get a nurse's advice. That's what they're there for :)

  • My doctor's "rule" is to come in if a) you're soaking a pad in an hour or less, b) if you've had a gush or c) if your contractions are less than 5 minutes apart, lasting 60 seconds or more and you can't walk or talk through them.

I wouldn't worry too much about being sent home.  I'm on my third pregnancy and you'd *think* I'd know what in the world is going on with my body, yet I've been sent home THREE times with unproductive contractions that were 2 minutes apart for hours upon hours.

You might try a hot shower and see if that makes the contractions subside.  Otherwise, see if they get closer together, stronger or longer and then call.

    Good luck!

  • I'd call L&D but not wake your DH.  They'll advise you what to do.  When my water broke with DD it was a pop and a gush, but like a PP said, it might also be a slow leak.  With your contractions, I'd say you are going into labor! GL!

  • You might be leaking but I wouldn't rush to L&D.  I would stay home & relax to see if things become more regular.  When your contractions are closer I would go.
  • I would at least call in... better safe than sorry!  My guess is that you aren't going to get any good sleep anyway with this on your mind, so you better find out what is going on.

  • I agree with PP.  Also keep in mind that IF your water broke, your body will keep producing more, so you'll keep leaking.  GL if this is the real deal :)
