February 2011 Moms

Has anyone had the talk with their OB about going past due date?

I'm curious if anyone has talked to their OB about how long they will allow you to go over your due date should the situation arise?  I want to have this conversation with my OB at this week's appt.  I'm just wondering if they would induce at 40 wks or wait 1 wk, 2 wks, etc?

Re: Has anyone had the talk with their OB about going past due date?

  • I was born three days shy of a month late (inductions weren't taking, my mom was adamant that she not have a c/s as long as I seemed ok) so I am VERY concerned that I will have a long overdue pregnancy as well.

I know many moms on here are big advocates of waiting until week 42 as long as things are ok, but we have agreed that I will have a checkup at exactly 41 weeks. If the NST comes back ok, I will go home, get washed up, and check in to do Cervadil overnight and possibly pitocin in the morning. If it doesn't go well, I will march myself downstairs for an induction immediately. My mother's birth with me was very very difficult, and I am hoping to avoid it. Plus, it is also kind of nice to know that even though his due date is the 17th, the 25th (maybe 26th depending on how things go) is the absolute longest I have to wait until I meet him.

  • i had the talk today! my ob won't let me go past 41 weeks which is perfectly fine with me since i'm ready for lo to be out of me now lol

  • I asked at my 36 week appointment.  They said that if i have not given birth by my 40 week appt (actually 39 weeks 6 days) they will schedule it for 1 week out.

  • My doc lets you go to 42w - he will schedule an induction at your 41w appt - but makes you come in for NSTs once you've gone to your due date.  He's also open to discussing an earlier induction once you've hit your due date.

I had an emergency c-sec w/ DS so this time around I'm not allowed to go past 41w.

  • My OB/GYN will induce between 39-41 weeks she told me.  I had asked her to be induced on my due date b/c my husband has to take leave for the birth... so if she doesn't come early it'll be exactly 40 weeks for me when I'm induced! :)

  • I asked at our last appointment and she said no later than 3-4 days past by EDD. I was kind of surprised but not going to argue because I'm ready now so I know I will definitely be more than ready by then.

  • I don't understand why docs allow their patients to go so long.  My sister was born 2 weeks late and she had already pooped meconium and was living in dirty amniotic fluid which made her a little sick.  I need to ask my OB at my next appt. how long he will let me go.  I'm worried about going too long.

  • My doc said she'll induce at 41 weeks.
  • My MW said he doesn't like to let people go past 41w, so if it came to that we could talk about it.  He also said IF things looked favorable for an induction sooner than that I could have one if i wanted- but he prefers not to unless there is a good reason.  I'd personally like to avoid an induction, so I'm not too worried about it.

  • My doctor will go up to 10 days past my due date before induction.

  • I need to talk to my doctor about this.... but keep getting distracted with other questions. Next appointment for sure.

My mom keeps telling me how my sister was almost a month late. To me it seems more likely that her due date was miscalculated... especially since it was her third baby and my brother and I were both born close to our due dates. But who knows.

  • I will be induced at 40 weeks because my blood pressure has been borderline - otherwise I would go to 42 with my doctor.  If you are induced before you are ready you are much more likely to need a c-section - that is why doctors like to have you wait.
  • I talked to her about it at my first appt when I was pregnant with Aidan. She induces at 41w.

  • At my practice the OB lets you go to 41w and the widwife lets you go to 42. I'm hoping not to have to worry about it, as I'd rather not be induced, but we'll see what happens. LO isn't going anywhere for a while...

  • My doc said we won't even start talking about induction until I'm a week over.

  • I am allowed to go a few days past, I have gestational diabetes, but with this pregnancy I am on so little insulin that I can go over a few days- last time I was on a lot of insulin so I have told if I didn't go by my due date then I was going to be induced.

I was induced early due to high blood pressure one day though.

  • My OB said we would start discussing it at 41w.  I hope that I don't get to that point because I don't want to be induced and I think LO should come out when he is ready, and I know my OB doesn't necessarily agree.

  • I asked either when I was interviewing OB's or at my first pregnancy appointment & she said that they don't let women go past 42 weeks.  I'm guessing that if by 41 weeks I haven't delivered they'll schedule me for an induction then, but my doc hasn't mentioned anything about it since then & since I'm not high risk I'm sure she's just waiting for things to progress naturally.

    This.

Also, my doctor said that she will consider going a few days earlier.

  • We've had this talk a few times - my due date is February 9th but he will not let me go past 41 wks.  So no later than the 14th or 15th.
  • With DD I went into labor the day b4 I was to be induced at 41 weeks.  This time my Doc told me if I dont have him first, she will not let me go past my due date. So 40 wks

  • My OB brought it up after I was diagnosed with GD. Because of the GD, he won't let me go more than a day or two past my due date before inducing.

  • I just talked to my doctor about this today. She said that next week (at my 38-week appointment) we could schedule an induction if we wanted. I'll decline that unless something changes drastically in the next week (or if it becomes medically necessary, obviously.)

She said she won't let me go more than 1 week past my due date.

  • I discussed this with my OB today. Depending on my cervix with the next several appts, we'll talk about it at the latest at 39 weeks.

Because a pregnancy can go 42 weeks, this is not too long. The due date is just an estimate, and they allow for 2 weeks on either side. My son was born 15 days past his due date and there were no problems. I am sorry there were with your sister but don't assume that all babies born after 40 weeks are going to be sick or have problems.
