hey ladies!!! My family is considering moving down to the Phoenix area and I am trying to research the safest neighborhoods and such. If you could give me any advice, I woulr really appreciate it. any info at all would help. Thanks!!!
honestly, this place is so huge no one here can really tell you anything without knowing where you will be working, etc. there are sooo many nice areas out here but it really just depends on the work situation, and how far you want to be away from work (and how long you want to sit in traffic going to and from work, haha)
We live in south Chandler / Ocotillo and it is really safe and I like it a lot.
Gilbert is also pretty safe and family friendly.
My mom lives in Tempe right my Arizona Mills Mall - not a good area. Lots of crime (theft) and traffic. Definitely avoid that area. I would also avoid several parts of Mesa...particularly by Fiesta Mall.
I've lived here forever and it seems as if there are a lot of really good AND really bad areas!!

Humpf.. I went to ASU (tempe) and have lived in the same house after graduating, because we like it here so much. We havent had much crime other than a car break in couple years ago, but that happens anywhere. As for traffic, tempe is pretty close to all freeways, and since adding the extra lame on the 60 i fly home every day. While it is a college town, i enjoy it
That being said, a area I suggest to first check out would be Scottsdale, its clean, safe, but can be yuppy and quite spendy! Cave Creek, is a nice mellow town, its on the outskirts of scottsdale and can be a commute to work since no major highway is too close. Arcadia area is pretty lots of green trees, older homes, centrally located, has good parts and bad parts. Mesa/chandler/glibert are all pretty much the same, with the option of newer homes. Places to avoid would be 19th-50th aves from buckeye to camelback area.. just over populated lots of older homes, and lots of big rig traffic.
Agree...Scottsdale, North Phoenix (PV area), Cave Creek all nice. I would avoid the south west valley all together. I moved out to 99th ave and lower buckeye because it was suppose to be the next new area...aaaahhh yeah right talk about unsafe!!! Tolleson and Avondale are areas avoid!!
The bad area I'm talking about is the Baseline/i-10 area in Tempe. Right on the border of Tempe/Guadalupe/Phoenix - by Arizona Mills. I personally had my car stolen twice there, my moms car and house have been vandalized, there are police helicopters overhead often, etc.
I absolutely love Chandler, particularly south Chandler below the 202. It's safe and quiet, but still plenty of activity. Nice, friendly people. Close to everything you need and other activities that are farther away are still easy to get to because it's close to highways. We moved here about a year ago and I have loved it! I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. Best of luck in your decision.
I moved to AZ about 10 yrs ago from Chicago. I have lived on all sides of Phoenix and I can personally say Arcadia is the best area and centerly located to everything. No matter where you move there is crime just more places then others. I would stay away from the Avenues and anything south of Thomas. My husband is a Realtor and can send you info just email me @ sindiluaz@yahoo.com.
I agree with the first post. It all depends on where you work and what is important to you.
I would disagree that the avenues are bad. You will find bad areas in both the avenues and the streets. Here in the Phoenix area the streets tend to be the East Valley and the avenues tend to be the West Valley. I grew up in the Northern Phoenix/Northern Glendale area and live in Surprise now. I LOVE the West Valley and would personally never live in the East Valley but it is all your own personal preference. I live in an area called Marley Park which is beautiful! (marleypark.com) I love Surprise because there is a lot of open land it feels very suburban. Eventually it will grow quite a bit with a freeway in the works and a big mall to have Nordstrom and multiple other stores.... but hopefully that is a ways away. And it's nice that everything we need here is only a 5-10 minute drive from our homes. A lot of communities out here are like that!
Another nice area is in North Phoenix and it's called Anthem. Have you seen the show Downsized? That is where they live! (onlineatanthem.com)
Scottsdale/Foothills are the priciest areas.
I know that Peoria School District is rated as the best district here. There are some really nice areas in the upper northwest valley in this district. (Vistancia.com, Crossriver, West Wing) but they are all about 10-15 minutes from the Loop 101. Good high schools in this area are Sunrise and Liberty.
And Buckeye is not bad all together. There are some great areas out there (verrado.com). But obviously anywhere you go you will have some bad areas around. I know Gilbert and Surprise were part of the rating of the safest cities in America.
I don't really know much about Chandler or Gilbert personally except that there is a great church in Gilbert!
If you are more in the South East Queen Creek is a nice area!
I would say that the avenues are bad, in the phoenix area but as you get farther west it's nice again. I live in Scottsdale and really like it, there are lots of parks, walking trails and play grounds.
