If you've had to use a nebulizer with LO...

... how did you make the process work? Lincoln goes absolutely NUTS.  My husband isn't home all week because of work and I have to give it to him every 4 hours.  He's so strong- there's no way I can hold him, his arms, his legs, and the mask at the same time. Earlier my mom came by after work and we couldn't get through the entire treatment with two of us.

Any suggestions?

  • I am in hospital with Noah as I type and what I have been doing is wrapping him in a shawl and holding him in my lap. With his arms pinned it it easier

  • Peyton hated it as well.  She screams the WHOLE time.  They assured me that meant she would get more medicine into her lungs.

I sit her on my lap (you could put his legs between yours if kicking is an issue) and basically put my right arm around both of her arms holding her down & used my left arm to keep the mask on.

    it's not pretty.

  • I find a movie that he loves and let DS watch it during his treatment.  I also let him explore the machine a bit before we turn it on.

  • When DS fought it he like to hold the tube that seemed to help. DS does so well now with it that he leans into the mask and does not cry or fight. He seems to know it makes him feel better.

  • With the first round we did it while he was drinking his bottle.  We put him in the highchair and held it under his mouth and nose while he was drinking.  Now we just wait until he is done eating and we have him sitting in his highchair, watching TV and we hold it under his nose/mouth.

    Good luck!  It gets easier.

  • My LO was a little younger when we had to do this so it was a little easier. We sat her in front of the TV with her favorite show on. We turned the tv up loud so the noise of the nebulizer didn't scare her and then we just put the mask up to her face. We let her hold it and chew on it and then we would take it back and hold it for her again. It is importnt to let them exlplore it.

  • Try using the blow-by tube instead of the mask.  Ours is a blue tube that attaches to a T where the mask attaches.  Hopefully one came with your nebulizer.

Our pedi said at this age, they actually get more of the medicine this way because when we try to use the mask the little ones fight it so hard, they don't get too much.

Also, if you can find a small tube of bubbles, I try to blow them for her to watch.
