Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Transverse lie?

I'm popping over from 3rd tri, hoping that someone here has experience with this.  LO is currently transverse (has been for almost 6 weeks) and my midwife (based on a number of factors) doesn't think it's likely he will flip.  I'm trying the spinning babies stuff and going to a chiro because I really want a VBAC, but my midwife doesn't want me to be disappointed with needing a repeat C-section.

Are there any complications from having a transverse baby (other than needing a c-section?)  Were you allowed to labor to see if the baby would flip?  My DD was breech and ended up with torticollis....anyone experience this with a transverse baby?

TIA

Re: Transverse lie?

  • I had a transverse baby and was able to have a successful version just before getting induced (like a couple hours before). However, we think she might have been flipping between transverse and correct for her last couple of weeks. However there were no complications aside from she had a low birth weight but that was more attributed to the fact that I lost weight up until a few weeks into 3rd trimester and I was not overweight to begin with.

  • I dont have experience with this but I know with a transverse baby, if your water breaks, youre at risk for cord prolapse (VERY serious), since theres nothing blocking the exit.

This is why I was on bedrest for three weeks when I started having premature labor.

DD eventually flipped to frank breech position a few days before my scheduled C-section at 39 weeks. My OB would not attempt a version due to placenta location but I was NOT allowed to labor at all. They told me once contractions started becoming near painful or every 5 minutes I was to go directly to the hospital for the reason above.

There is apparently always NICU staff on a c-section delivery at most of the hospitals in my area but DD only had a dislocated hip (it was fine in a week or so) but she stayed with me the whole time.

  • My baby was transverse untill 37 weeks and i was a first time mom. He turned then but didn't drop till the day I went into labor at 39 weeks. I would wait and see they can always turn. I know they say they run out of room but mine had no problem turning. Just watch for this kicks and check heartbeat often because it can cause them to get tangled in their cord while turning! I would try to ask for a version because they'll turnt he baby and be watching incase something was to happen and you need to get the baby out then. (i.e. cord prolaspe).
  • Nate was transverse when I went in to be induced, but he turned head down quickly with some positioning.  Only issue was he turned facing the wrong way (face up) and I ended with a csection because he was just positioned too oddly to come out without getting stuck.  We tried for a vaginal birth with three hours of pushing, but it just didn't work out.  I would just plan for the unexpected and the idea that you might end up with another csection.  I would still try for your vbac though if that's what you want.

  • I don't have the option to do a version because of my c-section scar.  I am hoping to at least have a TOL, but one of the midwives in the practice suggested contracting while baby is transverse might increase my risk of rupture.
