Excerise/Eating funk....

Ok, so I've been really lazy lately. I know people say that being pregnant is an excuse, but I will have 10 weeks once he is born before I have to go to a High School reunion and have family photos done. So, I'd like to be able to really shed some of the baby weight right after he is born.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get motivated on eating better and working out? I have 15 weeks until he is born and really would like to get moving... I need to get out of this funk!

Re: Excerise/Eating funk....

  • I'm really not one to be offering advice - although I DID crave fruit for the 2nd and 3rd tris, so that made eating healthy a lot easier - b/c the only motivation I had towards the end to exercise was in hopes of convincing LO to come out!  I walked a LOT during my last few weeks, figuring it wouldn't hurt and might help me progress faster.  As for earlier in my pregnancy, though, I couldn't be pried off the couch in the evenings.  I teach kindergarten, though, and was on my feet chasing 24 five-year-olds all day, every day, so it wasn't as though I sat around at work for 8 hours and then came home and sat around all evening (or at least that's how I justified my evening laziness to myself :P).

They do say that keeping yourself in shape during your pregnancy makes L&D that much easier, and of course, your body is able to rebound more quickly if you're fit, so that could be good motivation for you!  Honestly, you'll be surprised how fast you'll drop weight after LO is born, though - I really was expecting a battle, but at 6 days postpartum, I was back at my prepregnancy weight (which is my body's "comfortable" weight - by that, I mean that it doesn't fluctuate and I feel healthy at this weight), and I've maintained that ever since, w/doing literally NOTHING to get there/stay there.  I will say, I EBF for 3 months, and that really does help weight to melt off.

Don't be too tough on yourself - it's the winter, which makes it harder to get motivated to get moving, AND you're growing a human being!  Eat healthy, try to get moving at least a couple times a week (even if it's just a walk around the neighborhood), and focus on feeling good, b/c that's what you need to do!

  • I can't help you with eating.  I haven't been SUPER hungry during my pregnancy.  It's not that I don't want to eat, it's that I make myself nauseous.  Baby is growing fine and all, but I have put on 10 pounds to date (with 7 weeks to go)

As far as exercise goes, I keep telling myself that it will help come off after the baby is born and my doctor keeps insisting I keep walking and light weights.  Once you have gotten it into your head, you can't get it out.

  • The only thing that ever gets me motivated to exercise is doing it with a friend. Do you have a buddy that would exercise with you? I need to get moving too - I'm 8 weeks PP tomorrow and have yet to start exercising.

  • Ugh I feel you!  I've been craving sweets and junk like it's nobody's business.  I worked out a lot before pregnancy but stopped once I was pregnant.  I am in my 3rd tri now and feel like I really shouldn't start up something now...My goal is to start walking soon and every now and then I will walk up and down the stairs a few times.  I've also been starting to focus on my arms.  I've never done so before and my arms are a bit flabbier since stopping working out...I always focused on abs but obviously that cannot happen so I am hoping having kickin arms will help get me motivated post baby!

  • Well it might be 10 weeks after he is born, if he's born on his EDD-  many first babies don't come on time, so you could have less time.  Honestly- you aren't supposed to do any sort of hard core dieting or real exercising for at least 6 weeks post-partum.  Your body will be in recovery big time after delivering a baby.

I don't want to scare you- but I left the hospital after having my DD looking FAR WORSE than I went in & she was 11 days late.  I gained just under 30 lbs in 41 weeks & 4 days of pregnancy but had zero swelling and was basically all belly/boobs.  After 24 hrs on an IV, pitocin, epidural, etc. I was so swollen.  I hate looking at pictures of me after I had DD because I feel like I look like a monster who is about to eat my baby.  I guess it could have been worse- there are some women who break capillaries in their face/eyes and look even rougher.

I came home and couldn't fit my legs into jeans that I wore through 37 wks. It took about a week (when my milk came in & she really got to nurse) for the swelling to begin to go down and 2.5 weeks for most of it to go away. Most books recc'd bringing home a going home outfit for you that fit you when you were 6 months pregnant.

I will say that by the time DD was 6 months old I was back in much of my pre-pregnancy wardrobe- minus most tops since I went from a 36B to 36D because of nursing.   Also I looked 100x better after having DS w/o any IV or drugs.

I do think that moderate activity like walking, yoga, swimming is great to do throughout pregnancy and it's great for you to be in shape going into labor and delivery- you need stamina to get a baby out!

Just wanted to point out that daisy's post is a perfect example to keep in mind - everyone's postpartum experience is different, and you have no idea what you'll be facing (in terms of getting back into shape) until you're in the midst of it.  It's hard to know precisely what you could be like by the time your events roll around... I'd say, deal w/it when the time comes b/c you can't do much now anyway - but then, I'm also a big believer that if you're eating healthfully and keeping active, your body is going to gain what it's going to gain (now, if you're a couch potato and eating your weight in junk food daily... well, then, clearly you're going to experience a bigger weight gain).

And maybe it's just me, but at least in those early weeks... I seriously could've cared less what I looked like, and I'm not sure anybody saw ME anyway, since I always had a super-cute accessory w/me - my newborn! :)

I agree with this.....don't stress about it now. Just concentrate on eating healthy and doing some light exercise for the rest of your pregnancy. Everyone is so different too and everyone's weight loss PP will vary so much. For the record, I gained about 38 pounds with DS. When I left the hospital after giving birth, I was like half the size I was when I came in....my stomach looked like I was maybe 3 months pg. (And I had IVs and everything but just didn't have the horrible swelling experience that Daisy did). I was at my pp weight a few weeks after he was born-not that I looked good, mind you, but the weight dropped off me quickly. I'm not sure if that was due to breastfeeding or I just got lucky though. I still haven't managed to get back into an exercise program Tongue Tied

This was my experience too...I gained about 40 lbs.  My legs/feet were really swollen after his birth (couldn't even wear shoes), but I looked about 3 months PG when I left.  I EBF and the weight just fell off of me.  My only exercise was taking long walks around our neighborhood with DS, but once I went back to work I stopped doing that too.  Everyone's experience is really different and don't be hard on yourself if you aren't looking your best 10 weeks or less after your LO is born!

  • I was a vain b!tch of a pregnant woman- I owned 2 pairs of maternity pants total during my pregnancy w/ DD - I think my swelling experience was karma biting me in the a$$.

  • As someone who is 1 week 1 day post partum I can say that your body needs time to go back to "normal".  Although, I am below my pre-pregnancy weight my mid section looks nothing like I want it to.  However, I can say that I am in no mind set to begin an exercise regime.  My body is still getting use to sleepless nights and the joys of a newborn again and honestly I agree with the other poster who said others will be looking more at the newborn.
