Anyone travel by train?

I am leaving Wed for a business trip and return on Friday. There is some rather bad weather in the forcast so my corporate is requiring us to travel by the train early Wed in hopes we will avoid the worst of the weather. For some reason I am nervous. I guess because I have never traveled by train and this puts me 6 hours away without a car. Normally I drive everywhere or fly and rent a vehicle. This requires me to use a taxi to get from the station to the hotel. They aren't authorizing vehicle rentals so taxi is my only option. I'm sure everything will be fine but since it's new and I'm traveling alone I guess I am just a little nervous.

Re: Anyone travel by train?

  • We constantly travel on the train as we do not own a car. I find it to be an enjoyable experience and now prefer to travel that way than any other. I can get up and walk around, go to the dining car, snack car or observation car, watch a movie or read a book or magazine.. I honestly find it pretty relaxing.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, really :)

  • Loading the player...
  • It was really long. I spent most of my time in the viewing car or what ever its called.. its all glass. Bring snacks. and something do read.. games.. music.. a Blanket.. and Pillow!!

Thanks. That makes me feel better.

  • I love traveling by train.  My DH and I used to live in Philly and we would take day trips to NYC often.  Trains are so much easier than flying.  Don't be nervous--you will be pleasantly surprised!
  • I did a trip in HS by train (6hrs) and really enjoyed it.  Like PP said, bring something to read.  But it was nice to get up and walk around whenever I wanted and the seats were really comfy too (and my family is tall.)
  • Thanks for all the positive experiences. I guess my real hesitation is the fact I will not have a car. I hate that feeling, I like knowing that if at 11 pm I realize I need something I can drive to Target or whatever. However, since it's not an option I guess I'll pack the laptop and books and enjoy the trip.
  • I wouldn't worry- I used to take the train a lot for business trips!  That's what we all do on the northeast corridor (DC to Boston) b/c it's a lot easier than driving!
  • I loved traveling by train -- it's so much more comfortable and convenient than plane or car! Seriously, the seats are enormous by comparison.

I get what you say about not having a car, though. That would bug me, too. But I bet the trip itself will be a great experience.

  • I traveled by train, its so relaxing!

As long as its a short trip, anything overnight I would recommend a roomette but they are crazy expensive per way.

If you're concerned about a taxi, why not call a local reputiple limo company, and arrange a town car to pick you up at the train station and take you to the hotel?

  • I love traveling by train and have done a lot along the Metroliner corridor, DC to Boston. I also went once NYC to Miami (would not recommend that, 24 hour and no shower) and NYC to Montreal. I've also done lots of train trips in Europe and one in Russia. Bring music and a book and a journal, trains always make me want to write. And stare out the window and veg. If it's Amtrak, bring snacks. The cafe car is mediocre.

As far as the car, where are you going to be? If you can walk somewhere or call a taxi from the hotel, it will be just as good as having a car. And if you're in a city, a car is just a hassle.
