We're trying to decide if we want any special tests or screens done (NT scan, CVS, amnio, etc.). I'm curious what others have decided, as well as the "whys" if you don't mind sharing!
we are doing all the non-invasive testing like NT etc. I thought they only did amnio. if something came up in the NT scan. I wouldn't do an amnio unless absolutely necessary as that does have a risk of miscarriage.
We're meeting with a genetic counselor to hash out what we should do. We'll definitely do the NT, and my bet is that depending on the results of that and the blood tests, we'll determine whether we should do CVS or amnio. I'm kind of leaning toward CVS now.
Our reason is age (36) but more important, the fact that in previous IVFs we had significant egg quality problems and couldn't even produce viable embryos. This is a surprise pregnancy with my eggs (used donor eggs the first time) and we are very nervous about the potential of chromosomal abnormalities.

No optional screening for us. We are going to love our baby regardless - I hate the word "defect" as we are all born perfectly beautiful in God's eyes.
We are doing none. Why? We would carry full term no matter what, so we are trusting God. I know some don't agree with that, but it is our reason. The only test that we got was the blood test so I know if I need the Rhogam shot, and the gest. diabetes test for me if necessary. Nothing for the baby.
DS' birth defect was not detected in any of the screening tests. Since they can't screen for any and all abnormalities, I won't opt for any testing this time around.
no special tests. Will have usual blood work and one ultrasound. We are carrying our child to term no matter what. I feel no point being "prepared". The child is our blessing from God.

We had the NT scan done so that we could be prepared for whatever comes our when way our LO is born. There was an abnormality at the NT scan that could indicate a heart defect, so we will be having a fetal echo at 23 weeks. If there is a heart defect, I have to deliver at a hospital 2.5 hours away from where we live because the hospital here wouldn't be able to care for the baby properly.
It was decided that we don't need the CVS or amnio because of the results of the blood work that was done with the NT scan.
I am doing the NT scan and bloodwork for peace of mind and because it is a great time to have an ultrasound. You get a really good look at the baby moving around, and it looks like a baby instead of a gummy bear. Also, I want them to look at the heart whatever chance they get since BIL has a heart defect. I would want a specialist available at birth if that were a concern.

ditto. I feel that unless you plan on aborting a child with some type of defect or disease, what's the point in worrying the rest of your pregnancy if something comes out positive? We will not be doing those extra tests. I plan on keeping and loving the child no matter what.
We may opt for the NT only because I'll be almost 35 at delivery but we're still having conversations about it so I'm not sure what the decision will ultimately be.
I am having the NT scan and if that shows concerns I will have the amnio. I feel it's God's choice to end a pregnancy but I do want to be prepared incase the baby needs any special doctors or surgeries that can be related to different chromosomal defects/problems.

It is everyone's personal choice, but please don't feel that if you decide to do testing that it means you don't think your child is a gift from god or that you would abort it if something were found to be abnormal. As many people have indicated, for certain type of issues, it is advisable to have specialists on hand at delivery or even to give birth at a certain hospital that is equipped to deal with the issue. Deciding to test does not mean you value your child any less.

We will most likely do the NT scan and then the anatomy scan at 20 weeks, along with normal b/w. If something shows up on the NT scan, I think we would do further testing, but I haven't thought about it and haven't even had my first appointment.

Which is exactly why we did certain tests. We're in a small enough town that there are several medical issues that can be detected in advance that would warn us to arrange to give birth elsewhere. I would not feel morally superior to skip all tests and then lose the baby immediately after birth because we did not take available precautions. If you're truly positive that you wouldn't terminate, why be so scared of the results?

This.
Ditto. I'd even go so far as to say that by actively avoiding any opportunity to detect a medical problem that may cause lifelong complications upon delivery (e.g. spina bifida, heart valve problems that come along with DS, etc), you are doing your child a disservice. You may not love them less, but you are wasting the chance to provide the best medical care if they need it.
But it must feel nice to look down on those who choose to proceed with screenings that may tell them about the health of their child. Smug self righteousness is soooo satisfying.

we opted for none with DD#1 and will opt for none with LO #2.
DH and I dont have a history of anything and no matter what the results are it wouldn't affect our decisions on the pg.
