Parenting after 35

My part time walker... and, of course, I have a question ;)

Sydney is stuck between crawling and walking. She can walk (pretty much) perfectly. A lot of the time, she will just walk without even thinking about it. No help, no prompting. She crawls when she needs to get someplace "too far" to walk or when she forgets that she can walk, I think.

How long did your walker go from first steps to full time-no doubt about it walking? She took her very first steps well over a month ago. December 5th or 6th, I think.

  • I think it's different with every kid.  Pumpkin started walking the day she turned 10 mos old and she took off like a bullet.  Jack was13 mos old and he walked/crawled for about 3 weeks.  Short answer - I have no idea.  Wink

  • I could have written your post, except that Ellie took steps about a week earlier.  So I'm guessing it's a comfort level thing.
  • Yep.. it depends on the kid.  Charlie was walking at full speed about one day after taking his first steps.   Now he only crawls when he's really tired or unsure about himself (like outside on the dirty driveway!)

  • Took Jason about a month or so to adjust to exclusive walking.

  • Margaux only had a week between walking confidently and walking everywhere.  She will get up and walk two steps to get a toy she wants, when she could easily just reach for it.

  • every kid is definitely different. sabrina took her first step around 9 months and i was terrified that she would be walking by 10 (i say terrified bc i didn't want to give in to her getting older if that makes sense) but she fortunately didn't start full on walking till about 10.5 months- when she started walking more than crawling. since about a week before 11 months, though, she never crawls anymore.

  • M took his first steps at around 11 months then went back to full time crawling. He then took a few more steps about a week after his birthday, did 50/50 walking/crawling for another week then was a full-time walker.
  • It's crazy how different they all are. I mean, you would think that she would have it by now. More than a month of practice and she doesn't feel confident yet. Plus, she was an early crawler @ six months. So, she has been crawling for six+ months. Sheesh! Just kidding.

Thanks for all of your responses :)

  • It sounds alot like what Vivian is doing.  She took her first step the day before Thanksgiving then a full two weeks later she took 5 or 6 in a row.  By Christmas she was walking maybe 1/4 of the time.  Now today - and just today - she walks almost all of the time.  It was almost like "ok I'm one now so I walk...it's what I do".

Oh and I want Sydney's bedding.  That looks soooo comfy!

  • She'll walk full time when she's good and ready.  S never crawled again once he started stepping but every baby is different.

  • Dana, it took Gracie about 2 weeks. I remember posting the same question! It will happen and there is not turning back! I miss my little crawler!

  • Sarah only started walking right before she was 15 months old, but she never crawled after that. I don't miss the crawling stage, it's much easier not to be on your knees all the time.
