Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Rolling over at night is driving me nuts

My DS is overall a great sleeper, but lately he has been moving so much that he ends up on his tummy to sleep. I'm not worried about him sleeping on his stomach, but he whines and whines and wakes himself up. He did it every hour last night. He whined until I came in and flipped him back over to his back. Any thoughts on what to do?

  • My baby sleeps on her belly. I even put her down on her stomach. In the beginning, yes.. it made me nervous.. but she had such good head control and could roll over both ways, I needed to get over. That is where she is happy I don't even think about it any more. Take a deep breath...

  • Unless he really starts to cry and wail, I would leave him on his tummy.  He will get used to it and then it won't wake him up everytime he rolls.

The more you go in and flip him all the time, the longer it is going to take for him to get used to it.

I don't think she's worried about it - in fact she even said she's not. It's the fact that he's not happy on his stomach.  My son is the opposite - he cries if he ends up on his back.

OP - do you do tummy time at home?  Maybe the more he gets used to being on his tummy, the less he will care when he rolls over.

This.  DS went through a phase of this.  I just no longer go in his room at night unless he's throwing a huge fit.  He's whined and yelled for 30-45 minutes, but never escalates into "real" crying.  Now he wakes up a lot less.

  • I try tummy time after he has napped and I know he is not hungry. That usually lasts a whole 2 minutes before he cries. I contribute a lot of his clingyness and whineyness to teething, but the rolling over in the bed thing, I guess I will have to let him cry it out. Thanks, girls!
