We just had a financing meeting and were given a few options for IVF (cost-wise). Just wanted to get an "outside opinion" of those that have struggled with IF and what you have done or what you would do in this situation.
[Poll]
After 18 months TTC, our 2nd IUI brought us our BFP!

I picked special snowflake because for me it all depends on your financial situation and if you can afford it and/or are able to get a loan. In my situation - I have some insurance coverage, so the shared risk type of cycle won't work, we can use our insurance for 1 regular IVF cycle and then we would be OOP after that.
If I could afford it, I would absolutely go with the shared risk program. It is only $5,000 more than that other combined cycle and you have some assurance that you will get money back if it doesn't work. Of course, the hope is that it will work and right away - that is the risk. But, it if didn't, you could then take that refund money and go to another clinic to see if somewhere else could help you.
Also, do you have any idea if you have any insurance coverage for meds? I would check on that and factor that cost in to your finances. I have excellant med coverage, but I know from looking at my benefits statement that my 900iu vial of follistim was over $1,000. Depending on your dose - you may need more then that for one cycle.
(I would maybe post a poll on the PAIF or SAIF boards asking them how many used a shared risk program and if they felt it was worth it.)

I picked the 6 cycle option- only because for me, if I knew I had 6 cycles I would be less stressed during the process. Also, having the refund available is reassuring also.

Probably a dumb question, but I'm asking anyway. So, on the shared risk cycle, what happens if you get pregnant during the first cycle? You have to pay the total amount? Is that why it's a shared-risk?

Yes, that is the risk part for you.

Thanks CuteBride! Another question: In the shared-risk category, what happens if you do the first cycle and have frozen embryos put away for later. You get KU on that first cycle and then 3 years down the road you want to transfer your frozen embies?

For the 2nd question, if you have frozen embryos, then you would pay again later to transfer them.
For the "package" it is for "one" child (unless you get pregnant with multiples). If you get pregnant on the 1st try, then the "contract is fulfilled" . It is like gambling....

Totally agree with this! So much less stressful knowing you have a "net" to catch you.

Also wanted to add that if you have endo (like in your other post), then couldn't that cause trouble with implantation as well? In that case I would more strongly try to go for the 2 or 3 choices, if you can come up with the money.

This is stressful just to read. I can understand your worry over making the right decision. I wish you the best in the decision making process as well as the outcome of the decision. Keep us posted.

Yeah, that is another problem we are dealing with. I have never even had the chance to be pregnant (b/c of tubes), so who knows what will happen.
We will be financing, so hopefully it will work out to something we can afford.

I didn't have very many options. I didn't qualify for shared risk because of my DX. However, my RE doesn't really like doing IVF if it is one shot and done. He will do it, but at 50 some percent success rate per cycle, it really is about a 50/50 chance. It was a really tough decision but we ended up doing a two cycle package. For us it was a 2 cycle package or a single cycle. There were not other choices. Our two cycle package was a little more than $15,000 plus b/w, anesthesia and meds. A single cycle would have been about $12,000 plus b/w, anesthesia and meds. We figured if we got PG with the first cycle, we would be so happy we wouldn't miss the few thousand extra. However, if we needed the second cycle we had it. Now we have used both cycles and are still empty handed. I wish I had the option for a better plan, but I don't know how much more MH would have been willing to dole out.
It is a tough decision and something to discuss with your RE. My RE told us that because of my DX we weren't the standard couple and our likelihood of success was thus a little below his average. This is part of the reason that we went for 2 cycles.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Me= 37 and DH = 41
Dx: DOR, Endo, APA+ (really high beta 2 glycoprotein antibody and high everything else tested), heterozygous MTHFR mutation, positive for lupus anticoagulant, high FSH, low AMH and both tubes blocked (per HSG on 3/8/11)
IVF #1 - long lupron (with HGH, intralipids, lovenox and BA); 4 retrieved, 3 fertilized; ET 2 blasts and 1 frozen = BFN
IVF #2 - a version of antagonist with EPP (with HGH, intralipids, lovenox and BA); 6 retrieved, 4 mature, 3 fertilized, 2 blasts and 1 frozen blast transferred on day 5 = BFN.
IVF #3 April was postponed to May, May was canceled. June/July was canceled. Had a cyst aspiration and then began IVF #3 in August. ER on 8/22; ET on 8/24 with AH. +HPT on 9/5. Beta #1 (11dpo) = 3; Beta #2 (15dpo) = 29; Beta #3 (17dpo) = 60; Beta #4 (19 dpo) = 118. Heartbeat at 6 weeks 6 days =132. Lil is here!
Do you have any information about your RE's IVF success rates? And is there anything in your dx that would tend to increase or decrease your personal success? I definately would consider the odds of success per cycle in deciding whether or not to do the shared risk.

I would without a doubt select the 3 fresh & 3 frozen with the refund option. I say this having 2 failed IVFs and an IVF turned IUI that also failed.

IF you have the $ I would do the 6cycles, but if you don't I would just do the one cycle.
Is this the only RE you can go to? Maybe see about other places? Or have you looked into trials?
