Trouble TTC

Metformin

Hi.  I'm new to the message boards and this is my first post. I was wondering if anyone has been prescribed Metformin without having been diagnosed with PCOS?  We have been trying for a year and a half and recently spoke to the doctor and started treatment.  My progesterone level was 1.3 after my first round of clomid, so my doctor took me off and prescribed me 1500 mg of Metformin and will put me back on clomid after 3 months.  I have had an HSG and it showed clear fallopian tubes and they did not mention any cysts or abnormalities.  She said I did not necessarily meet the PCOS profile but wanted to put me on it anyway to try and get my hormones in check since my progesterone was so low.  I just wanted to check and see if anyone had had a similar experience.

Re: Metformin

  • Hello and welcome!

I am on metformin but I have PCOS. I did a few cycles on metformin before they added clomid to the mix. I guess sometimes metformin can get your body in check enough to make you ovulate on your own, my guess is thats what your dr is looking for. Are you seeing an OB or a RE?  A RE can give you more information, their job is to help you get pregnant and they seem to be a little better at it then the OB.

  • I am just seeing my gynecologist right now.  It's the same practice I've been going to since I was 17, so over 12 years, but I recently switched doctors within the practice to one that supposedly has had great success helping women conceive.  I had blood work done in April 2010 that all came back normal and I was told to just keep trying.  It had been over a year of trying in October, so that's when I called to switch doctors and I was prescribed clomid and had the HSG done.  I don't know at what point I'm supposed to go see a specialist.  I was thinking I would wait out the Metformin and then go from there.
