2nd Trimester

Diapers

How early is too early to start buying diapers? Everyone is telling me to start loading up on them now. But I remember my mom saying that she did the same thing when my little brother was born and he/she hated the ones she stocked up on. So, what do you ladies think? Go ahead and load up? If so, what brand? size??? or just wait it out?

Re: Diapers

  • We're cloth diapering and so far we've bought new and used gDiapers in size small, and a few Thiristies.  I've heard good things about gDiapers so I'm really hoping they work for us.  I think I'm going to purchase a few FuzziBunz because I'm a bit interested in the OS diapers - but I hope to stick with gDiapers.  I plan to have 35 cloths, 30 liners and 12 of the covers before baby comes.

If I was going the disposable route, I really wouldn't stock up though.  I've heard too many stories about LO not being able to wear a certain brand/outgrowing them too fast.  I'd wait it out.  Chances are you'll get plenty of disposables at your shower, and hopefully you can figure out what works best for you that way.

  • I have heard the same thing and asked about it on the boards before. Most people on here said it was a bad idea for exactly the same reason you stated, baby may not like them. Not all diapers work for all babies.

We are using gDiapers so we have bought a few covers and will be buying the inserts soon. If you plan on using disposables I would maybe buy a package of a few different kinds and when you find out what works for you and LO you can stock up on that brand. Maybe start collecting coupons that you can use, depending on when your EDD is. You can also usually get free samples from the diaper companies if you sign up on their websites. If you are having a baby shower people will most likely also give you diapers.

  • I'm new at this too and that was one of my questions.  I decided to register for the brand I think will be best in the bulk box and also for a couple other brands in the small package.  This way I'm covered.

  • Wait.  Buy a few packs of diapers of different brands so you have some when the baby is born but do not stock up.  Every baby is different and you don't know what brand of diapers will work best for your LO and which ones may irritate her/him.  Your mom is right - you could end up with a bunch of packs of diapers that you can't use because they don't work for your child.

  • I asked 3 of my closest friends what type of diapers they preferred and the answers were all different - one liked Pamers, the other Luvs, and the 3rd Huggies and all for the same reasons Confused.  So I decided to get a large pack of each type (in size 1) and thats all that I am doing for now.

I am going to wait on diapers but am planning to stock up on wipes.  Also thinking of having a few different types of body wash and lotion on hand to see what works best.  Will wait until after my shower though to get that stuff.

  • I stock up. I buy large boxes of either Huggies or Pampers. Both of my boys have used Huggies, but I've heard Pampers work better for girls??? If I find diapers on sale, I just pay for them seperately at the register, and tape the receipt to the box / bag.  I figure if I have to take some back, it's not that big of a deal. I usually only buy them from either Walmart or Target., so it's not like I'd have to run around town returning them. And, I would be making multiple trips to buy them if I hadn't stocked up. I always hate making the emergency diaper run, so I try to always have a pretty good supply at home.

Basically, if you do decide to stock up, just save tape the receipt to the box.

  •  It just all depends if the brand you like works for your little one. For example, if he/she is senstitive, leaks, doesnt fit right. I would maybe buy a pack of your choice and see how your LO does.

I will be buying Huggies Newborn.

This is a good idea, but pay attention to the return policy. I have noticed a lot of stores do only 90 days, I know Wal Mart does, not positive about Target. So, if you buy too early and they don't work, you may not be able to return them. I guess what I am saying is make sure you don't buy too early so the return period will overlap with LO's arrival.

Target and Walmart both have 90 day return policies.

  • We waited until our baby shower to see what we needed. We had 3-4 bags of newborn Pampers (which we used, mostly). There were too many! I had to give 2 away to the Pregnancy Care Center because DS moved up to size 1-2 Huggies (from Sam's Club) at 2 weeks!! I wouldn't get more than a pack or two to start, just because you don't know what brand LO is going to agree with or how big he/she will be!
  • I started last week - just a pack of huggies new borns with my grocerie shopping - i plan one buying a new pack and size every shop just so i have some "in stock" at home" I've ordered a few cloth nappies too - i think it just doesn't seem like such a huge expensive if you stretch the prucahses out :)

This too!! although be careful when shopping for lotions and washes - they need to be fragrant free - apparently a lot of babies have irritations to anything with fragrance and if the accidently get some in their mouth it can distrupt feed time because the can still taste the soap....
