Transitioning to Big Bed with arrival of next baby

We are expecting our second child in July (DS is 16 months old).  We plan to move him to a big boy bed in June (?).  Our crib is convertible to a regular bed.  We are trying to figure out if we want to use the crib and covert it for DS's bed and buy a new convertible crib for baby #2 (that will than be that child's bed) or if we want to use the current crib for baby #2 and buy DS a new bed.  Thoughts?

  • We can't decide either. I think Im going to wait until its closer to my due date and see how LO is doing. I am either going to move her directly to a twin bed with safety rail or buy a cheap crib for LO #1 to use until she's ready to go to regular bed. Im going to use the current crib for LO #2.

  • Well, our crib isn't convertible but we are just getting DD a twin size platform bed..they are lower to the ground and we will just put up a universal bed rail I found on amazon that works with platform beds.  The crib will go in the baby's room along with all of DD's current bedding/decorations and DD will get all new big girl items...I feel bad for taking all of her things away but we are making sure to do it within the next month or so, so that the switch will be made before the baby comes.  I figured it would be silly to spend the money on another crib when DD will probably do fine in a bed (I hope!) that we would need to purchase at some point anyway.

  • well my thoughts were that I definitely wanted to keep DS1 in the crib as long as possible because trying to corral a toddler and play the nap time/ night time game while taking care of a newborn is soooo not going to happen here. So we're postponing putting him in the big boy bed for a while.

With that in mind we're getting a new convertible crib for the second baby, both will have their cribs/beds until they go to college! So when I think of it that way it makes more sense to just invest in another convertible crib for each child we have and that's why I bought only cribs that convert to a full size bed instead of just to a daybed/twin.
