foam vs coil mattresses

I don't really understand why foam mattresses are better because they're lighter than coil.  Maybe it's just pregnancy brain.  Can anyone explain this to me?

Re: foam vs coil mattresses

  • I don't understand the baby side either, but I've always found foam mattresses to be much hotter than coil mattresses. I wonder if its the same for cribs and if that's a good/bad thing? We opted for coil.

  • I don't know that they are necessarily lighter than coil, but we are going with a mattress from pottery barn kids (coil) but with a foam memory topper.  I feel that buying a more well made mattress will last into the toddler crib transformation and help him to sleep longer at night (there were several posts relating to this yesterday/the other day).

    That's my thoughts :)

  • when you have a 2am blow out and need to change the sheets, lifting the coil mattress gets old fast.

Also the baby side is firmer then the toddler side to help prevent suffocation from sinking into a mattress.

  • We got a Serta coil mattresses...where do you buy foam mattress covers for those?

  • In the Baby Bargins book, they recommended the foam (Colgate) mattress, even though it was a bit more expensive than the coil...  I think it might have been because it holds up better than the coil?
  • Less weight is a pro because lifting the mattress to change the sheets is awkward. If you can, pick up a coil and pick up a foam (I did this at IKEA - and I bought the foam). Because a crib is enclosed, you have to do a lot more lifting to change the sheets than you do on a bed.

  • I have the Colgate Classica Foam mattress for DS and it is great.  VERY firm and lightweight, so changing the sheets is super easy.  I haven;t found a cil mattress that is as firm.

I actually just went and bought a Serta coil mattress for DS today, because he seemed to need something squishier and softer now that he is older.  I am wishing I had purchased the 2 in 1 Colgate Mattress (it has a softer Toddler side).  The mattress I bought has 260 coils.  Baby Bargains suggest getting a coil mattress with a high coil count (if you don't go with foam)

The Colgate is as firm as the day we bought it and perfect for an infant, so I am going to use it for the new baby.
