A little AW + a ruck ?

DS started signing to go up in the wrap last night and today for his nap and tonight... I guess he's starting to outgrow the need to nurse to sleep! :(

I noticed now that when I ruck with his arms in, that the "seat" isn't very big anymore (yet another sign that he's growing up!). How do you know when not to ruck with their arms in and what do you do when you want that support for their head? Did you just do a different carry or get a wider wrap? My wrap is 70 cm wide, so I don't know if there are wider wraps! Thanks!

  • I ruck arms out, but Grace normally doesn't sleep on my back. What wrap do you have?

  • I have a Storch Leo. I usually do ruck or DH with arms out, but since he started wanting to go up on my back to fall asleep, I just noticed how I wasn't able to tuck the fabric under his bum completely. When his arms are out there is still plenty to get a good seat. Tonight I could feel a space b/t the ruck seat and where the passes cross under his bum, but I checked it every few seconds and it held up great. I'm not concerned right now with the seat, but if he gets much taller I don't know that I will be able to get a good seat with his arms in. I was just wondering if there is a point where you know you won't be able to ruck with arms in (or do you just try it until one day their bum pops out of the seat!), and if so what's a good back carry for when you know they will fall asleep? I don't know how long this phase will last, and it's been awhile since I have tried other types of back carries.

  • Love that wrap :) have you tried a bb slen? They are the widest wraps I know of. Also maybe a bwcc instead of a ruck?

  • I ruck Trevor quite often and he'll squeeze his arms in and out as he pleases.  I start with his arms out and then when he gets tired he puts his arm in and snuggles down. Sometimes he has one arm in and one arm outBig Smile  He rests his head on my shoulder or my back when he sleeps.

  • I haven't tried a bb slen. I only have one "real" wrap (the storch), and a shorty DIY. I would love to try more wraps (you guys are such enablers :)!), but I'm going to wait until I have another LO on the way (or until I find a Zara Lemongrass or maybe a Vat on FSOT).  It's been awhile since I have done a BWCC, so I might have to start practicing that one before he gets sleepy. I guess I will go see how wide are the bb slens! Thanks KW!

  • As far as butt popping, it's not the width of your wrap. Make sure you have a good pocket to start with, tuck under the butt and spread to the knees.  A great way to keep your ruck in a tight position is to twist the rails in towards your chest before you go behind again.  Also make sure you don't tighten your bottom rail too much or it will pop.

  • Your pic of T is precious and a good example of sleeping with an arm out! I guess I will try with his arms out and see what he does. For his nap, I didn't have the top rail tight enough and his head was leaned back.. I guess he was OK, but it didn't look comfortable, so I took him down. Luckily he stayed asleep.

Yeah, I haven't had any trouble with his bum popping out. I just wondered if you just know when you can't do arms in anymore by the way it feels when you wrap. Since I always did arms out until recently, I wasn't sure if there was a point that you just know you can't do arms in (like how much seat is enough seat to do it safetly). Sorry if this doesn't make sense!

  • Thanks, I forgot that I had that pic in my siggy when I was typing that.  T is almost 2 and I haven't had any problems with rucking in any of our wraps. I don't think there's really a point where they can't go arms in, since they can decide which way they want to have them.  But who knows T is on the smaller side so it's possible we haven't hit that point.

Here's a great thread on wrap widths though from TBW

  • Thanks!

Yeah, I guess I should just ruck with his arms out and let him get into a position he likes to sleep. I guess I thought the top rail would be too tight for him to get his arms into, but I probably don't get it as tight as I think! I'm just glad I have the wrap! Sometimes it works better than nursing!

even if it's real tight, T always seems to be able to squeeze his arms in to get comfy and snuggle on down.  haha, yes very true it does sometimes work better than nursing.  There are plenty of days when T won't take his nap, I'll throw him up on my back and he's out!  Today was one of those daysBig Smile, so rest assure you have lots of bw'ing days ahead of you.  And btw, I love Storches

  • That's good to know!

Yeah, he has been having a time lately with sleeping (teething and developmental spurt (I think..since he wants to play at 3-4 am!).

I've had the storch since he was 2 mo. and it has by far been the best investment over the last 12 mo! I mainly got it because of it's 'workhorse' quality, and while I would love to try out more types of wraps/different lengths, I've not regretted getting it! I just wish I had known about FSOT sooner (I would've bought 2 used wraps, instead of one new one!).
