Working out in early pg

I have always been a very active person. Up until mid-October, I was at the gym at least 3 times a week doing strength training classes, spin classes and kickboxing classes.

Mid-October brought on many things to occupy my time: my sister had her twins and my senior girls volleyball season began. I also battled a nasty cold for over a month and am anxious to get moving again.

I spoke to my dr and she said it was fine to get back into it. Just to be sure that when I am doing cardio, to not exert myself (be able to carry on a conversation).

I obviously don't want to get back into the spinning classes, but am considering getting back into the other classes (with less weight and less intensity). I am not sure though. I may just start swimming again and stick to other things like the elliptical, bike, walking and light weight training.

Any thoughts on this?

  • I do Moms Into Fitness DVDs and she talks about the Borg breathing scale. Google has a few good finds on this. As long as you're between a 5 and 8, you're ok.

  • Get back to it, as soon as you can.

Don't limit yourself to "pregnant lady" exercise. If you're used to more, you'll be unchallenged and bored. I'm still lifting moderately heavy weights, taking regular yoga, walking on an incline (I didn't run before, though), swimming, elliptical. In other words: what I was doing before, adjusted so that I feel okay.

  • I continued the same exercise routine when I was pregnant - running about 60 miles per week and lifting weights, and abs. I was able to continue until I delivered at exactly 40 weeks.

  • I taught group fitness classes until 3 days before I delivered my very overdue DS.

Listen to your body.  It will definitely tell you what to do.

  • I did a spinning class the day before I had my daughter. I thought that was just about the best cardio I could do while pg.  Did I work out at the same intensity as before? Nope. Just kept an eye on my heart rate and stood up to stretch whenever leaning over was too much for my back.
