Baby Proofing and Electrical Wires...

So we've JUST started to do some minor baby proofing (we actually should have started about 6 weeks ago when she started crawling, we keep a good eye on her) and I was just wondering what you do to the electrical cords with things that have to be plugged in all the time (computers, lamps, etc.). It seems that these cords are baby magnets.

Thanks!

  • I don't think this is baby proofing really, but I will lean a baby gate against the wall so he can't see them.  So far, it's out of sight out of mind.  I will be watching this thread for better ideas, haha.

  • I just keep an eye on him and divert him with something else if he starts to aim for the cords.  I'm sure that won't work forever.

I'm kind of a believer in babyproofing the baby rather than the house, to some extent.  Teach the kid NO, rather than just putting up bumpers and barriers everywhere.  A pipe dream, probably!

  • We don't do any real baby proofing for cords. We watch him tell him "no" and in some cases put things in front of cords he is particularly interested in. Most of the cords in my house are already behind furniture for the most part. You could tape them up to the wall I suppose if it makes them less appealing to your LO.

    This exactly.

This is the direction that we are going in. We're not going crazy on the baby proofing. Covers for the outlets and putting up cleaning solutions has been the extent of it so far. Maybe a baby gate for the kitchen and laundry room since that is where the cat box is and the doggie water dish is. I just don't want her to pull a cord and have a lamp fall on her head. Ouch!

My DH's response to that would be "Well then she won't do it twice!"  He's of the mindset that babies need to learn cause and effect.  I disagree, although I guess he's got a point within reason because we can't baby-proof the outside world.  It's tough, we don't want to see our babies get bumped and bruised either!

  • There isn't much you can do with cords except hide them behind furniture.
