XP: sleeping on your back

is it really as bad as everyone says it is?? I wake up soooo many times during the night and even though I go to sleep on my side I wake up on my back. I always turn back over to my side but again and again I wake up on my back (it could be because my hips ache really bad). anyone else experiencing this?

Re: XP: sleeping on your back

  • my dr said that my body will let me know when it's time to get off my back. I told her I was still fine, but then she asked if I was waking up on my back. When I said yup, she said it was probably my body telling me to get up. I have to have a small wedge pillow now behind my back because I get BH if I'm on my back for too long.

  • Not sure if it is "so bad," instead it just SO GOOD to lay on your side (mainly left side) in terms of baby (and placenta)  getting more blood, oxygen, and nutrients.  It is also supposed to reduce the amount of swelling you have...or so I have heard.

I try to fall asleep on my left side a pillow wedged, body pillow, and then a pillow behind my back (DH loves our packed bed now-HA).  That way if I roll onto my back, I am still sort of on my side.  ;)

THis is me too. Dh has took it apond himself to try to be one of my pillows so I don't roll on my back! He can be cute sometimes!

  • I asked my doc this question bc I'm a big back sleeper.  He told me if my heart rate goes up, I'm breathing harder etc, I should not be on my back.  Lately I've just had baby on my bladder when I'm on my back so I naturally roll on my right (I know, left is better) side.  I also spoon a pillow or have one propped behind my back.

  • I end up on my back pretty much every night. I start out on my left side and nothing has been able to stop me from ending up on my back but I feel fine so OB said it's not a huge deal.

  • Its no big deal if you wind up on your back. Personally though, If Im flat on my back for more than 3 minutes Im finding it hard to breath. :P

  • I sleep with a prego pillow shaped like a candy cane, so I don't know that I'm ever *fully* flat on my back, but I'm 39 weeks today & still am on my back probably at least half of the night. I start out on my sides but back is just more comfortable and I've never had problems breathing or with numbness or anything - although it's way more common to have those feelings. Just try keeping a pillow or even a folded towel propped under one side of you so you're not completely flat and you should be fine.

  • I am the same. I sleep on my sides and wake up on my back. I dont think my body likes the weight of my baby pulling my belly to the side onto the mattress so I roll over onto my back as I sleep. But then I have dreams of suffocating. haha. I dont think its a big deal as long as your body wakes you up. You could always ask your Dr what he/she suggests to help you stay on your side if your worried about it.

  • I wonder this too. I wake up every morning in a deep deep sleep on my back. It feels so great that I can't wake up enough to move. I feel fine on my back, but is the baby okay?

This is exactly what my Dr said too.
