well we had our first "real" appointment yesterday..
just had an internal exam & pap -- since i switched doctors. still early in the pregnancy, uterus is still tipped back. but blood test confirmed pregnancy. have an ultrasound next week to confirm dates..then another appt in 4 weeks.
then got to talk to the doc about my VBAC...he told me "you're the boss". and i dont know if this is a good thing or not. it might be a good thing, but i dont want it to end up that he does what he wants anyway cuz he's the doctor.
he was all for the VBAC. he said there isn't a reason i'm going to tell you NO.
but he was insisting that since i had a big baby the first time around, chances are i'll have another big baby..and reality is he/she isn't going to come out that way...vaginally. i dont know how i feel. i really like him, amongst other docs.
he also has 2 midwifes with him that are around more than him... i thnk i just need to relax & see how my appointment with one of them go... i know it's still early, and a while to make the decision. but i feel my mind is already made up & its' not gonna go that way.
plus, SO is having a hard time with the RISKS! HELP me. please
Re: appointment yesterday
I'd be worried that the doctor has already made up his mind that you aren't going to be able to deliver vaginally. Even if he says you can try a VBAC, I'd be worried that he'd be less patient or willing to try different things if he's already decided that you will need another c/s, kwim?
Are there other VBAC options in your area? I'd want to get another opinion from a doctor or midwife who also does VBACs if you really want to try for a vaginal birth.
Does your SO understand the risks of repeat cesarean as well? Maybe if you sat down and talked about the risks and benefits of both options, he would realize that VBAC has many benefits and it's no riskier than a repeat cesarean. Then you could make a rational decision about which you are most comfortable with, instead of one based on fear.

I agree w/ Iris - it honestly doesn't sound like he's really truly supportive for your VBAC. I had a 8 lb 12 oz baby and my doctor hasn't once mentioned size of this one being an issue. I know that it's likely that I will have another 'larger' baby, but there's no reason to say he/she won't be able to be born vaginally. If your doctor is already bringing this up, I'd be concerned.
My mom was a tad freaked out about the risks of a VBAC, until I told her the statistics of uterine rupture. In cases where no drugs are used to induce or augment labor, it's less than 1% and even when they are, if used minimally, they don't go up all that much. Definitely something you need to be aware of, but it is highly unlikely. There are also risks to a repeat c/s, especially if you are considering having more kids in the future. Neither choice is without risk.
Good luck with your decisions.
