Pregnant after 35

Unsure about having #3 after 35...just putting it out there (long-ish).

Hi! New to this board...

I'm 35 now, turning 36 in March. We just had DD#2 in October and the first half of that pregnancy was horrific - so sick that I started puking blood and had to go to the ER to be re-hydrated and have liquid Gravol in April. I spent the next 4 months on Diclectin for the puking. *sigh*

We now have two girls who we adore, but DH & I would love to have a boy too. Unfortunately, since there's no guarantee we'd have a boy, we're unsure if we want to try again, DH would be so disappointed...not to mention our ages, DH is 39.

Also, I was off work for all of my last pregnancy due to allergy issues at my workplace so now my EI is going to run out early (we normally get 50 weeks of maternity here in Canada) and I'm most likely going to have to go back to work soon. Not sure how a new employer would take me getting preggers after only a couple of months or less on the job. Not that they can fire me for it though. lol

Any thoughts?

  • Oh my gosh, puking BLOOD!  Ugh!  I am so sorry you went through that!  I would be nervous about going through that again too, though at least your doctor can be alert for it.

Okay, these are totally my own ramblings, take 'em or not as you will...

As for age, if you aren't having fertility issues, a few years shouldn't be a huge difference.  I'm almost 43, and my mom had me and my younger sister when she was in her forties.

The boy thing... yeah, that's a big risk.  I guess think about whether it would be harder for him to have three girls or regret not trying for a boy one more time.  I guess you could think about adoption, that would certainly cut out the throwing up and the uncertainty about gender.

What's the recharge time for your parental leave?  I can't remember what it was when we were in Quebec, but it seemed reasonable.  Waiting for that would give you time to think about the other stuff, and really you guys aren't unreasonably old to consider one more in a year or so.

ANYway, good luck to you all!

  • I must move to Canada. You guys are so much more civilized there.

Edit: I"m sure someone will be ticked that i"m being un-American.  Not so.  Just envious of the generous maternity leave.  12 weeks is sad.

  • I'm 40, hubby is 36, this is our first. I have no doubt in my mind that had we done this 20 years ago, it would be a lot less, what's the best word... horrible?

I'm always tired, almost to the point of being non functional during trimester 1, only slightly better in trimester 2. I acquired high blood pressure around 16 weeks so i'm on high blood pressure medication.

I didn't get morning sickness, so hey at least there was ONE thing pregnancy related i haven't had to deal with.

I keep hearing that it's a lot harder on you when you're older. Other than a bum knee, tho at 40 i was in great shape. I had just lost 70 lbs i was full of energy.

If you really want another baby, go for it. My biggest complaint about doing it so late is the financial impact on my retirement. Clearly i won't be able to retire at 55 as i had originally planned when my husband and I were dual income no kids.

  • We are done after #2. I don't want to go through this again, and we also don't think we could handle another one financially. We also feel like our energy level isn't where it was even a year ago. But, everyone is different so it's really a personal decision.

I will say that my cousin had two boys and really wanted a girl. She had a third kid to try for a girl, and it was a boy. She's fine with it, of course, but I'm just saying there is obviously no guarantee about the gender (which I'm sure you know).
