Parenting after 35

**MAmy**

Ok so after replying to your post about Matt's 18-month appt. I did some online research and it seems like maybe your pedi isn't applying his own standards after all because 20 words by 18 months seems to be a pretty common recommendation.  So now I've got to figure out how I'm going to get Simon to learn 19 words in 2.5 months!!!  That seems impossible since he's not even trying!  Any ideas?  How did you get Matt to learn those 30 words?

  • Usually around 16 or 17 months, there is a language explosion where everyday they are trying new words. I wouldn't worry although we are still waiting for ours but we are also having some major ear problems which can slow down language development, I guess.

  • We definitely had a word explosion around 17 months.  But after his 15 month appt. we really focused on him speaking. Matt signs so we concentrated on the words he signed the most. He caught onto those words first.

We also read one of his favorite books over and over (Goodnight Gorilla). We would point to the light on every page and repeat the word light on each page.  Then the next day we would add balloon. Then the next day we added door etc.  Pretty soon he was pointing to the items and saying the words.

    Good luck!

  • Ditto the 17-18 month language explosion - which is what we are counting on these days!  Ellie communicates well with pointing and all that, but words - ha!  I asked about it at our 12 month appt since Amy had been getting grief and our pedi said she didn't worry about talking until 18-19 months and that all those kiddos with a lot of words before that were just showing off :)
  • Ok, guess I'll just relax till he's a little older then.  I talk to him plenty but DH is a mute, I'm always on him about that.  I think my pedi needs to lecture him.

  • Does Simon chatter?! Ellie "talks" nonstop but nothing recognizable except the occasional mama or dada. And I know what you're talking about with DH!
  • Yeah he babbles.  Mute husbands are nice sometimes hahaha!  Hey i read your email on my Crackberry, will reply via computer when S is napping! Wink
