If you have a friend with a baby who isn't using their infant seat anymore (and that friend hasn't been in an accident), you can borrow theirs and buy a new cover to make it look new or a different style. There are cover sets on ebay every day, but you can also buy them on gracobaby.com under replacement parts.

Yeah, my Graco Snugride was reg 179.99, got it on sale for 99.97, and my Graco My Ride 65 was reg 259.99, got it on sale for 129.99... had to stalk toys R us for the sales though... and when they have good sales things go very quickly!
Still... it is one of the things I would rather spend more money on... our commute is 1hr each way, mostly highway... so not something I want to compromise on!
I'm getting a Graco Snugride as part of a travel system, but the only problem is it only covers up to 22 lbs. So I registered for a convertible seat, too-- The Britax Marathon, which allows for rear-facing babies from 5-40 lbs. and forward facing up to 70 lbs.
The Britax is $279, which is really expensive. I doubt anyone will buy it off our registry, but we will probably buy it with our completion discount. Maybe we'll end up with a few giftcards to help cover the price. It's worth it, because we won't be able to use the Snugride past the first year.

YES!!!! Be glad you're not in Canada though... way more! Our Snug Ride 35 we've been eyeing was $219. Just went on sale for $149 so I decided to snag it- with free shipping! We can't buy the carseats in the states (even though just about everything else is!) because of safety regulations. (Its the same exact seat, but its gotta have the approved by Canada sticker on it!)

True.
You can get a decent Snug Ride for about $100, but yes, they are pretty $$$.
