I'm working on pt'ing my dd. We have been doing panties at home but she is in a diap at school. Home is getting better, but no luck at school. We have something to go to these next two nights. I've heard some ppl use thick training pants to catch spills w/o the child feeling like she is in a diaper. I'm thinking I could just throw a pull-up over her panties so that she feels the wetness but I don't have a huge mess. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I may also incorporate this method at school next week.
Re: Pt ?: panties plus pull-up, or thick training pants?
Training pants are absolutely useless, in my experience. If your child is still having accidents, go for the panties under a pull-up method. There's still a bunch of cleaning up to do with training pants. They're thicker, but not that absorbent.
What's the approach at school? Do they have regular potty breaks? I sent DD to school in pull-ups the first few weeks in September thinking she might not feel as comfy telling a stranger when she needed to go, but the staff at the school were really good about prompting her to go and she's only ever had 1 accident at school in the last 5 months.
personally I think that when you start potty training it is easier to do it all at once. we went from full time diapers to full time chonies. with the exception of night, but after 4 or 5 nights with a diaper she refused to put one on anymore & we haven't really had any trouble with it.
but it she is in a diaper at school then I don't think it would be too much of an issue. as long as you keep it to a minimum.
I did the underwear and pull up over it....didn't work.
Here's when pt'ing finally clicked for DS. I got together with daycare and told them we pt at home but I'm afraid to send him to school in underwear, but I had to do it. I sent 3 extra underwear and 4 extra pants. I said when he runs out of underwear, then use a pull up. He only had 1 accident that day. We've been good ever since.
Whenever I use a pull-up (grocery store, long car trips) we spend the rest of the day having underwear accidents. Pull-ups puts our DS in total regression.

We have the same issue-- DS is potty trained everywhere but school. I called the pediatrician - she said this is common and as long as they were reinforcing keeping dry (they do a sticker chart and it seems to be working -- yesterday he only wet 1 pull up in 9 hours) - then let him keep control over the situation (but she clarified.. if 3 months from now it is worse or the same, then we can start intervening.)
I asked about the pull up over underwear or the "cool alert" pull up. She said that if he's trained at all, it's too late for all of that... he knows when he's peed. She said that if we have an event or something we can't deal with an accident, we should just put him in a pull up and point out the picture at the front (it's a rocket ship... a little phallic for a little boy if you ask me, but whatevs) and keep asking if the rocket ship is still there. We've actually not done this yet -- so far everywhere we've gone with him in underwear - Costco, the kiddy gym, friends homes... he has been fine.
we did PU over panties to go out of the house for a week. Worked like a charm, no mess and she still was feeling the wetness, or in some cases, not going until we went on the potty! PTing took DD about 2-3 weeks to completely go pull up or training pants free.
PS- Gerber makes a think cotton panty, good for when they are really close to getting it and just need a little extra padding to protect the pants or bottoms. HTH!
