Trouble TTC

How long til' you asked for help?

Hi ladies!  I am new to this forum an apologize in advance if I am in the wrong spot but this is the most appropriate place I found to post my question...

How long did you TTC before deciding to ask for medical help?  I read everywhere that women under 35 should TTC for a year before asking for help (I'm 30).  Little backstory on me: DH and I decided to TTC on 10/09, conceived twins  in 1/10 then m/c in 5/10.  Had a D&C and was asked to wait to TTC again until 7/10.  We've been TTC ever since with no luck using OPK's.  Now 8 cycles later I worry that maybe something changed after the D&C?  Am being paranoid, where do I start?  Should I look for an Obgyn that will listen to me and run tests?  Thanks so much!  Also, let me know if you recommend any threads :)

  • First off, I am so sorry for your loss.  I can't imagine the heartache.  I started asking my OB about initial testing at 10 months in prep to see an RE at the year mark...because I know some RE's like to have the HSG & SA done before your first appointment. **Also because DH was 38 and figured time is not on our side.  We got the MFI dx at 11 months of TTC but it was like 14 cycles and were told to go straight to RE since the MFI is a infertility diagnosis.

While you have only had 8 cycles since m/c for TTC,I would ask OB to do bloodwork to see your progesterone levels to see if that was a problem with your last pregnancy.  It will at least get the ball rolling but it is still a little early to get too worried in my opinion.

  • personally, I am a big RE pusher.  My OB said I didnt need to go after my m/c in May.... not until 3 m/c do they get worried.   I decided I didnt want to be reactive - but rather proactive and I am so happy I jumped ship.  We found we had slight MFI, a septum in my uterus and after lap that I had stage 2 endo.  I shudder to think that I may have had another m/c or waited who knows how long without knowing any of that.
TTC#2: septum removed, 2 losses, Stage 2 Endo, thin lining, slight MFI

  • Welcome! I'm 26 and I waited a year to ask for help. According to my OB, fertility starts to decrease in women after 30.  Since you have a history of M/C (very sorry for your loss) there may be underlying issues and you may need a work-up.  If you want help now, go for it.  It's very important to find an OB who will listen to your concerns and run the appropriate tests.  If you feel your current OB doesn't do that, ask your friends about theirs. You can even do it discreetly, ex. "My OB has horrible bedside manner, I'm thinking of looking for a new one." is one I have used before.  I wish you the best of luck in your TTC journey.

  • I sought help w/ my ObGyn at 8 months of timed intercourse. I was charting my cycles and had ovulatory cycles each time and we timed intercourse but nothing. My Dr. agreed to order the standard fertility tests then instead of waiting the 1 year mark. After trying for 3 cycles of Clomid (unmonitored), we moved on to an RE and IUI.

  • Thank you all SO much for your advice!  This truly gives me the confidence to pick up the phone and request tests be done... I found in reading this board that many women TTC follow their instincts and seek help before the one year mark are unfortunately mostly always proven right!
