Talk to me about swings...2x+moms

If you are a 2nd+ time mom, what do you have for a swing and do you like it?

I am conflicted. I have been leaning towards getting the bright starts cradle and sway swing through Target but not sure I want to spent $130 on a swing. I like the option of two ways to swing so I looked at the fisher price model since it is less expensive but it doesn't get very good reviews. And even though I like the option to cradle and swing I am not sure if it is really $130 worth it if I can get just a one way swing for half that cost....

Anyone have advice to give?

  • With DD1, we bought her a $20 bouncer from Wal-Mart. For this one, we bought a Boppy swing from Salvation Army for $7. (Practically brand new)

Before you spend big money on swings/bouncers, look around to see if you can find second hand. You don't know if LO is going to appreciate the swing or bouncer at all and it would really suck to spend that kind of money to never use the thing.

  • I got the FP Space Saver Oceans Wonder... it's a swing and bouncer combo.  And it's 69.99.  I figured I couldn't go wrong with spending this amount.  You don't ever know if your baby will like it or not so why spend a lot of money on one up front, ya know?

  • We have the fisher price rainforest swing and looove it. We can switch the way the cradle is sitting, adjust speeds and play music, sounds or have it silent. DD loved it and we can't wait to break it out again- it was a lot of help!

  • I agree with pp to look around for second hand ones or borrow.  Ds loved his swing (we had the fisher-price papasan swing).  A friend is using it now, and her dd loves it.  We got it as a gift, but it was well worth the money, in our opinions.  I have heard of of babies not liking the swing though, and if you're looking to save money, I'd hate to waste money on it.

I already went around to consignment stores around me and checked out craigslist. Everything that people have out there is complete crap.  I have been thinking of possibly waiting a little longer and being patient to see if something comes up but since I am 35wks I do not know how much longer I want to put it off.

  • So, I have NO idea the name / model of the swing we had for our daughter and couldn't find it online but it was amazing (she loved it!).  It was definitely FP and was one of their cradle models so at least $130....the exact one, I'm not sure but it was in neutral colors (so, a little less offensive IMO from some of the brightly colored ones).  It may be the Starlight Papasan but didn't have that netting on the side.  Anyway, my daughter LOVED it....she wasn't a fan of the bouncy chair but the swing was a sure-fire thing with her so I thought it was worth the money.  We'll be using it with #2.

BTW, this swing still plays music and has different speeds.

  • In that case, I would start off cheap. Check out WalMarts, Targets, etc., and see what you can find at a MUCH lower price. Like I said, you don't want to find out your LO doesn't like it after putting down a lot of cash. Also, remember that LOs usually outgrow them by 6 months or so. (Not sure how long since DD was rolling out of her bouncer at 4 months old.)

  • We had the Fisher Price Papsan Nature swing...used it everyday, all day...was the only way we could get him to nap for the first 4 months of his life.  Worth EVERY penny :) Check on Craigslist if you don't mind used!

  • My ds hated both the swing and the bouncy chair. We had a cheapy swing that was given to us last time so maybe that is why. But we where given a FP ocean wonders swing for this baby and I still hav3e te boucy chair so maybe she will like them. We will see.

  • We have the FP rainforest open top cradle swing and LOVE it. It was the greatest thing when DS was little. He loved it- it was one of our most used items.  We loved the option of swinging both ways, and that it plugs in.  He loved the sounds and mobile on it. Now we will use it again for our second child- so I feel the cost was worth it. Ours was a shower gift, too- so we were lucky there. But... I always recommend cradle swings because we love, love, love ours.

  • I didn't have one til DD was 5 weeks old.  We bought the fisher price my little lamb and I bought it on walmart.com for only $99 with no shipping.  The motor is a little loud but that thing was a LIFE SAVER!  She would sleep in it or just rock and watch the mobile so I was able to shower or do a load of laundry and not worry about her.

I highly recommend a swing. I had a bouncer, too, and she hated it- never used it.  everytime I laid her in it she threw a fit!  No idea!

  • We had the FP Rainforest as well. I wanted one that would swing both ways and that would plug in. You can get it right now online from Kohls for around $90 if you have a Kohl's CC and use the 30% off code LOVE2SAVE30.

  • I saw the FP little lamb cradle swing on Amazon yesterday for $104 with free shipping.

We borrowed a swing with DD, and I used it when I had to pump while she was awake.  She started trying to climb out of it around 6 months, but it was worth it up to that point.

  • We bought a less expensive swing...a 'portable travel' swing...it is small and low to the ground and folds up super easily for travel.  This is what we had for DS and I loved it because it was so nice and easy to move around the house...for example if I was in the shower I could move baby into the bathroom with me or into the kitchen while I was making dinner...it cut down on the amount of time I had to run to the other room to check on him.  Also it was great because I could just take it with us if we traveled somewhere.  It still has the little bells and whistles...plays music and swings itself with batteries :)

This is what we used for dd and will be using w/ this lo also.  It is super convenient and would highly recommend this especially if you are looking to save some dough.

I have the same swing.  DD loved it and I can't wait to put DS in it as well.
