LO will not sleep in crib or pack & play...help!

Any words of advice?  This has only started to be a real issue within the last week or so and is mostly only during the daytime.  He sleeps a little better at night.

He's a sleepy eater, so he falls asleep 99% of the time while nursing.  I burp him, sometimes he wakes up, sometimes not and most of the time he goes back to sleep in my arms if he wakes while burping.

I try to put him in his crib to nap until his next feeding and he wakes up screaming bloody murder within 10 minutes of lying him down.

The only place I can get him to nap is on my chest, which is KILLING me because I'm sitting in the recliner on the couch and my butt and legs will fall asleep sometimes and I'm getting a knot in my shoulder.  He won't even snuggle or sleep with DH - cries and fidgets and screams when he tries to lay down with him to give me a break.  Any ideas on how to get him to get back to sleeping in his bed?  Or the pack & play?

  • My son was like too..Have you thought about using a Moby wrap?  It's pretty easy to use and then you can have your hands free and at least get some light housework done, make lunch ect.  What about a swing or a boppy pillow (with your supervision of course)

    Good luck!

  • Do you have a sound machine that will play a heartbeat noise? That may help him stay asleep once you have laid him down. I found that has helped with my LO, she didn't sleep well in the bassinet for the first month and a half or so. I have a "Soothing Sounds" sheep and I know Graco makes something similar as well.

Also, during the day, try using a baby wrap so that you can keep your babe close but can still get things done around the house and don't have to stay on the couch all day.

    Hope these suggestions help!

  • Do you swaddle him? I would suggest swaddling after he eats and is ready to go down. White noise also helps to calm them. My dh is a fusser and grunted at night, and I just used the First Years Sound and Soothe for the first time last night and he went right down. I don't know if you want to make another purchase, but the best shower gift by far is the Fisher Price Rock in Play Sleepers, my LOs sleep so well in those. Good luck!

  • We finally realized we had to let our LO cry. Not to the point where he's seriously distressed - but we have let him cry for 5 minutes and he's fallen asleep. I know CIO is not suggested for this age, but I've learned what his tired cry sounds like so if he's just doing that, I leave him be. It doesn't always work - sometimes he does get too worked him and I go in and get him - but I think he is just one of those babies that needs to cry in order to sleep. He'll even do it when he's in our arms.

Other than that...we just keep trying. My mom and sister came and watched him today and got him to sleep on his back in his pack and play for the first time. I tried to do it tonight to no avail, but knowing that he did it once gives me some hope. :)  I also sometimes put one of my shirts in with him so he smells me. If you don't feel comfortable lying him down on your shirt, you could leave a breast pad or something else that smells like you in there with him.

  •  I've also had the problem lately with the daytime naps. One thing that I've read, and that I still really need to try, is to put the crib sheets in the dryer for a few before laying him down for a nap.

At night, my LO sleeps really good and I think it is partially due to the noise of the humidifier. So, I'd try some white noise, too.

Also, like the previous poster, my LO sometimes just has to cry for a few minutes before falling to sleep. My MIL and their family call is the "sleep song", and my mom calls it his "last hurrah." Seems pretty common. Every child is different, and it sometimes it feels like forever, but it's really only a couple of minutes. When I first start getting him ready for a nap, sometimes he's not in a mood yet to take the paci. After letting out a few protests, then he'll take the paci and relax.
