The only downside to black is that it will be really, really hot in the summer. Otherwise-I really like the look of it. I have light gray leather in my car and it does not show any stains at all...and I have a very messy toddler that eats her breakfast in the car every morning. Leather wipes clean pretty easily so I don't think staining is really a problem.
eta: I've spilled coffee on my passenger seat more times than I can count and the leather is completely stain free.
We have black leather in both of our cars and I love it. It gets hot, but otherwise it works great. I definitely don't think it would be a mistake to get black leather.
We have gray leather interior. It's a '99 Explorer and I'm 2nd owner, it was very, very well taken care of prior to my purchasing it, then came my dogs and then the two kids.
It still looks beautiful. Sure when we take the carseats out for whatever reason it is ewwwwww gross back there but usually all it takes is a rag and some water and it's good as new. I'd say that it's more important how soft the leather is than the color. Carseats dig in really hard so a soft leather might not survive that very well but ours always bounces back. When my mom is here we put the seats in her truck for a week or longer and in that time all the creases ect come out of the leather.
I've had leather interior (black) since I've had kids and I love it. Anytime there's a spill, it just gets wiped up. Which is great when it's milk or pee!!!
Oh, and we have a prince lionheart seat saver and that also helps.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.
THANKS!!! I really appreciate hearing everyone's input. I was worried since I have not had leather in a while.
I am buying my new car tonight!!!! I worked out an amazing deal all via email and it is $1500 less than my expectation to spend. If anyone needs to get a new car come chat with me because I totally nailed this negotiation process without ever leaving my home. I am so excited and get this...the price I am paying it $200 over invoice (which technically invoice is less than shown because after certain amounts of time they get money back from the manufacturer etc...so typically invoice is $800 less than stated, but they still initially have to pay the stated price when they get the car. But I still feel stoked.

What kind of car are you buying? We did the internet/email negoations too for our car and it was awesome. I'll never buy a car any other way again. We got the price we wanted, printed out the email quote, test drove the car one more time to be sure, and were in and out withing an hour and a half.
black leather hides all ! i've got black leather, it wipes clean and you can't really tell that i haul around an 18 month old toddler daily in it. the only downside is that black leather gets REALLY hot in the summer ! a concern for parents but kids in carseats, it doesn't matter.
i would NEVER EVER get a pale interior w/ kids. i had a jetta years ago w/ pale gray cloth interior and i babysat a friend's 2-3 year old and the smushed in orange sprinkles from a cookie NEVER came out.
