Baby Names

Nothing goes with my last name! Nelson!

So we're finding out the sex of our baby in 3 weeks, and we want to have a name for each sex picked out so we can immediately start calling him/her by their name. We've got a great girl's name--Adley Grace.  But we're stuck with boys names.

We feel like everything either somewhat rhymes or just plain doesn't flow with our last name which is Nelson.  We like names along the lines of Mason, Jackson, and such, but they kind of rhyme with Nelson. Also, so many names end with N, and I read somewhere you're never supposed to name your baby a name where the last letter of their name is the same as the first letter of your last name--in our case, N.

Please help!! We like unique names, more different than Justin and James, but don't prefer the super unique names like Phinneas and those kind.

 Thanks!

  • Can't say that my last name was easy, but it came down to picking a great first and middle, and went from there.  Find a name you love and it will be great.

  • Well, we definitely don't have the same style but I'll try to suggest some

I think you just need to find a name that doesn't end in "son" so it doesn't sound rhyme-y

Grady, Wyatt, Matteo, Kai, Luca, Jude, Philip, Patrick, Silas, Hugh or Henry

  • Have you consider other surnames as a first name?

    Everett Nelson

    Spencer Nelson

    Reid Nelson

    Wesley Nelson

    Bennett Nelson

  • I don't think the problem is that they end with the same letter your ln begins with, it's that they have the same final 3 letters and rhyme, Johnathan Nelson or Aaron Nelson sound fine to me just as an example.  Skip all the ____son names.

Try going to nymbler.com and putting the ___son names you like in to see what suggestions it gives you with other endings.  Carter, Isaac, Caleb and Walker were a few that came up for me.

  • I think anything with the -son sound (or names that end with "n" in general, will not sound the best with Nelson. So honestly, I would suggest not using Jackson or Mason.

I was going through the SSA list, and thought these might have a somewhat similar feel:

    Liam

    Caleb

    Lucas

    Jack

    Carter

    Connor

    Cole

    Levi

  • Search engines are your friends. There's a great one at babynamewizard.com.

Three-plus syllable boys' names that don't start or end with N are here.

One-syllable boys' names that don't start or end with N are here.

Really, you just need to look for names that don't start or end with N and it would be better if it wasn't also two-syllables, like your last name. It's not as hard as you're trying to make it.

  • since you have a first name last name (your last name could be a first name) try to chose a first name that is obviously a first name - like Philip or Richard.

If his name is Maxwell Nelson people will always wonder if it is reversed or not.  So they wil also call him Nelson Maxwell.

  • Calm down Mallory! Geeze... My name ends in "N" as well...I've had to give up Evelyn and Vivienne, two great names. It happens.

Boy's names that end in "N" are crazy trendy right now. I'm kind of glad they don't flow well with my LN so I can use that as an excuse if anyone ever suggests them.

So you seem to be into LN's as first names.... How about...

    Fletcher

    Parker

    Tucker

    Griffin

    Chandler

    Cole

    Porter

    Grady

  • The first name that popped into my head was Trevor. I'd definitely stay away from names ending in "n".

    There's also:
    Bennett

    Liam

    Grant

    Garrett

    Oliver

    Conor

    Grady

    Asher

    And lots, lots more... :)

  • Some of the boys/men I know that actually have the last name Nelson are...

    Luke

    Lance

    Rowan

    Cooper

    Aaron

    David

    Jerad

Aside from avoiding first names that end with -son, I don't think it's that difficult to work with.

  • We have a last name that ends in -son as well, and we ran into the same problem.  We ended up having 2 girls, so it didn't matter.  But here were our boys' names...I think they would work for you:

    Gavin

    Garrett

    Graham

    Everett

    Adam

    Isaac

    Quinn

  • I think you're overthinking it.  I know a guy (our age) named Landon Nelson, and I've never thought his name was weird or rhyming.  Find a name you love and go with it!
  • I have a last name that's similar in sound to Nelson, and I've run into the same things.  In other posts I've had people suggest Nolan and Lucien, neither of which flow with our last name.

Just avoid names that ends in an "on" sound and you'll be fine.
