  • welcome to AZ!  I have heard nothing but good about them.  We just did our tour with them this last week and we are going to deliver there.

  • I had a bad experience there but I seem to be the only one.

1- they told us on the tour that they had a nursery where we could let the baby sleep for 3-4 hrs. I didn't think I would want/ need it but there were people on our tour who were upset (2-3 couples at least) that they couldn't leave LO there all night. Well, when I delivered 2 weeks later I had a very hard and long delivery with no sleep. So, I asked about the nursery. The nurse was scoffed at me and told me they didn't have one. I asked a nicer nurse later and she told me that they had closed it 6+ months earlier. This happened to at least 3 other moms in my moms group. But, I have heard they corrected the tour since then but are telling people the nurses will take the babies if needed. I was crying because I had NO sleep in the hospital because he would only sleep when being held by someone who was standing and no nurse ever offered to take him a bit.

2- My son was 3.5 weeks early. When the lactation consultant came (at about 5 hrs old) she tried for a minute and said "well, he's early. He probably won't latch until he hits the 40 week mark" and gave me formula. She told me to try at every feeding, which I did for a week or so. I called for an appointment because I was told "call anytime you need help." They told me that if I was trying at every feeding that was all I could do until he was 40 weeks. I asked about making an appt when he was 40 weeks and they told me they don't see babies over 2 weeks old. I called an outside agency that I found myself because they had no numbers to give me. He did latch on, but never well and I ended up pumping full time for 2 months. I truly believe I should have been given 12 hrs or so to let him try to figure it  out. I know that now, but I didn't then. He was 7lbs so it wasn't like he was super little.

3- My epidural didn't work and the anesthesiologist kept telling me it was working. They reset it once and put an additional 6-8 bags in.  I don't think that was really the hospital's fault, but it was very hard and annoying.

I am a pretty laid back person so for me to not be happy is sort of a big deal. On the upside- the food was good.

  • I just delivered there and had a great experience.  The nurses were awesome, they were all so nice and helpful.  I was sort of sad to leave, but they definetly prepared me for going home with my baby.  The nurses were great about showing you how to do everything so you don't get home and not know what to do.  I actually enjoyed having the baby stay with me instead of a nursery b/c it gives you extra time with the nurses so you can learn.  A friend of mine deliverd in TX and had to ask how to do so many things when she left, but I really felt like they trained me on what to expect/how to do things.

I didn't take advantage of it, but there is a spa and you can have someone come to your room and give a mani/pedi/facial, etc.

  • I've had several friends deliver there and all loved it.  Two of them had babies that required the NICU and they had nothing but rave reviews for the staff there.  I live in Tempe but I'm delivering at Scottsdale Osborn because Scottsdale Healthcare has such a good reputation.  Shea was just a little too far for us or I would have gone there.  Best of luck no matter what you choose!

  • See, it seemed to me that after the first 12 hours, my nurses didn't help me at all. I could hear them laughing and carrying on (and burning popcorn) all night long but I had to call for one every time I needed help. My LO cried all the time at the hospital and would not sleep, so maybe they avoided us since nothing was really helping- not sure. We had colic for 3 months so I guess that was just LO's way. It was quite the shock to me because I am so not that high maintenance. But everyone else I know has loved it there. Maybe it was a busy weekend or something, but we will not be delivering there again if I can help it. Just too much went wrong for us. I guess its like getting food poisoning at the best restaurant in town!

  • thanks for all the input. this is my 4th baby, and since i have my hubby around to help me out in the hospital, i actually prefer that the nurses stay out lol

we like to be left alone whenever we're in the hospital as long as everything is going good and everyone is healthy.

i noticed that a few of the hospitals in the phx area offer spa services, so i think i'll definitely have to take advantage of that :)

  • I was transferred to Scottsdale/Shae by ambulance at 30 weeks with DD1.  They had a higher level NICU for early delivery.  I didn't arrive until about 11:30pm, and I was scared out of my mind.  The nurses were incredible.  I can't say enough nice things about them.  I was there for several days on bedrest, and both the perinatologists and NICU staff were incredible.  Thankfully I didn't have to deliver that early.

I loved that they had "room service" 24 hours a day.  The hospital where we delivered our DDs had a standard cafeteria that was only open certain hours, and dh would have to either bring me something if it wasn't meal time, or leave to go get take out.

I did get a pedi while I was admitted.  It was heavenly.

  • I have heard great things about Scottsdale Shea and Osborn, both. I am going to deliver at Banner Good Sam though. ONLY because Phoenix Children's NICU is right inside the hospital and since I work at PCH, I feel really comfortable with the nursing staff and Dr.s there because I know them all. If you are a high risk delivery i would never reccomend anyone, but them, but like i said I am biased. :)

    Good Luck!

  • Hi! I had my second baby there and loved it.  Then I had my third at Scottsdale Osborn and it was awesome.  Not as fancy but I think the care was better.  The nurses there told me the nurses from Shea have their babies at Osborn because of the cozier feel.  I will be having number 4 at Osborn.
  • This is GREAT info, and I also benefited from it, thank you!!!

Quick question: Do you ladies already have a Dr (OB/GYN) and he/she delivered at the Scottsdale Hospital? Or was one provided for you? I'm also new and trying to figure stuff out.
