It was really well done. Remember it's an independent film...so it's not supposed to be for mass market. I think Natalie Portman will win the Golden Globe and prob get nominated for an Oscar and win as well for this performance.
I have to admit that it was quite disturbing.. but there was some really awesome camera work going on with mirror images and light and dark stuff. I was pretty impressed. Natalie was great! But there were some pretty fantastic people behind those cameras! I'd like to see it again to try to notice more. Does anyone know if she actually did the dancing... I'm sure she must have a background in ballet, but that would be quite difficult for anyone.

I don't think either girl did the dancing. I believe they usually film above the waist so they do the arm movements but a body double does the dancing esp when they pan far away. They might have taught them some minor stuff.
Nats body was worked on though....holy cow was her chest and back ripped like a dancers. I was shocked. I would love to get my hands on that workout.

Mila trained for about 3 months 5 hours a day 7 days a week, and Natalie trained for about a year before filming. They did most of their dancing but had to have a double come in for the hard lifts when Natalie's had a Rib break during filming.

whoa...that is intense...and kind of not normal. i bet her bone density is super low from all that NOT eating. and she still got KU. I can't wait to see it tonight!

Natalie did do the dancing. Her now fiance was the choreographer.

They both did some of the dancing but not all. As a dancer and teacher, i can definitely tell when the double was dancing and when it was the actresses. They did a fantastic job with their dancing for the amount of training, but the professionals have done it everyday since they were 5. Any of the close ups, even with the lifts, were Natalie. She dislocated a rib, not broken. And they physical therapy scene was one of her actual physical therapy sessions.

This is the article where she talks about it. They both had previous ballet training when they were younger. I'd love to go see it again and catch some more stuff I missed before. I knew about the therapy scene and cringed when her hand was up in the rib like that....yuck!
I think it's safe to say that whenever it was a close up of the legs it was not Natalie dancing. Also, I remember about a 15 second dancing scene with Mila. Why did she have to train so much? Maybe they cut some out.

She did all of the dancing herself! She was a competitive dancer when she was younger and she trained 8 hours a day for about a year to get back into shape. She also lost 25 pounds for the role. If you study ballet, you too could have a body like that. But it's really not healthy.

I'm sorry, but not all ballerinas are unhealthy. Yes, they are at a low weight. For some, it's natural. For others, it's the intense training, but most actually DO eat enough to be healthy. You can't dance at a high level for long if you're not. And no, she did not do all the dancing herself.

Re: After seeing the movie The Black Swan....
Buahaha. I really did not like the movie at all. I thought it was super slow and just boring with a duh ending. I was so disapointed.

I did think the acting was amazing and hope she gets an oscar or something.

I liked it too, however it was very intense. I am sure my blood pressure went up like 20 points during it. lol
The acting was superb. It will be a shame if Natalie doesn't get an Oscar.
Although I wasn't a fan of the ending.
