On January 12th at 9:53 PM, Melody Evangeline came into the world feet first. I was having consistent contractions around 6:30 PM, left for the hospital at 8:00 PM, and I was doing alright with the pain. Some contractions hurt more than others. I was joking with the nurse and my DH while the nurse went through a series of questions. A doctor was monitoring my contractions via his phone away from the hospital, and he wasn't convinced I was in active labor. He had the nurse check me just in case. The nurse checked me, and she needed to consult with another nurse for her opinion. Both very experienced nurses were stumped and consulted with the doctor on the floor. When she checked me she said I was complete, and my bag of water was bulging. I already knew my baby was breech, because I had an ultrasound earlier that day that confirmed it. By that point the contractions weren't getting very intense, and I couldn't help but push. They kept telling me not to push, but I couldn't stop it. My water exploded on the table, and they ran me back to the OR for an emergency c-section.
Right before we went into the room, my body started pushing again. They kept telling me don't push, and I told them to knock me out. Her foot popped out right before we went into the OR. I told them something was happening. They lifted the blanket and saw a foot hanging out of me. The doctor said push, and with one big push. My baby girl made her dramatic entrance into the world feet first. It happened so fast that DH, who was putting on scrubs, walked in a couple of minutes after she was delivered. He said, "You did the c-section already?" and the surgeon in the room said, "I'm not that fast!"
I was Team Green, but with all the excitement nobody told me what I had. I asked them what did I have, and they told me a girl. She was perfect, and she looked great for being 5 weeks/1 day premature. She weighed 6 lbs. 9 oz., and she was 18 inches long. She was breathing room air, but she still needed to go to the NICU. Funny thing is I had a dream in October that I wrote about on my blog here: https://babyboo2005.blogspot.com/2010/10/last-night-i-had-strangest-dream.html I told the nurse this dream while I was recovering from my experience and just having stitches. We didn't know the weight yet, and when another nurse came in to tell me her weight, they both had the chills.
She is currently under the lights for jaundice, and she was on the CPAP machine, but she was well enough to be taken off this morning. She also had her feeding tube removed. She still has an IV, and is receiving antibiotics just as a precaution. I didn't know if I was strep B or not, since they had just done the test at my appointment earlier in the day. They think she has to be in the NICU for a week, but they won't know for sure. It's a day to day assessment type thing. She is doing great so far. I was already discharged, but I'm going back later to stay with her. My hospital has a really nice NICU, and each baby has it's own private room with a couch for me to sleep on.
By the way, January 12th is the day my DH and I had our first date 9 years ago. I think Melody just wanted to join in on the fun.
