Hawaii Babies

the saga continues...

Remember my SIL's daughter A, with the bad tooth?

Well, SIL and BIL took A to the dentist after they got home. But because they decided to be all cheapass (and yes, they do have money, they just prefer to spend it on booze and cigarettes), they took her to a free dental clinic instead of a specialist child dentist. Since A has never been to a dentist before, she freaked out and wouldn't let them near her.

The clinic told SIL and BIL that they couldn't treat A, and that if they didn't want to go to a children's dentist their only option was probably to take her to the hospital (which is free since we have universal healthcare), where she'll be put under anesthetic and operated on to remove the tooth and clean up the abscess in her jaw.

I figured they'd pony up the cash for the dentist because that kind of a hospital trip would be scary as hell for a little kid, plus it won't help in the future - they need a dentist to monitor the rest of her teeth, etc.

Guess who's planning on taking her to the hospital instead? Angry

    Accidentally, in this case.

SIL says she missed the pill "for just one day". Personally, I'm skeptical...I know she was on the regular pill, not the mini, so she'd have to be pretty damn unlucky to miss one pill and end up pregnant. And she's a flake and a half anyway, so I think it's waaaay more likely that either she wasn't taking them routinely, or she accidentally-on-purpose wasn't taking them, if you know what I mean.

I'm just so aggravated with the entire situation. MIL even offered to pay for the children's dentist and they turned her down, so I think it's a case of being lazy vs money, which makes it even worse in my eyes.

This is horrible. For me, this is neglect. What other things are they too lazy to do for her? Arg! I wouldn't be surprised if, eventually, your MIL/FIL end up with custody of your niece. Sounds like it might in the child's best interest. I know if I had a niece or nephew in a similar situation, I'd be pushing for custody (even temporarily) so my B/SIL could get their sh*t together.

When I was married the first time my BIL/SIL were so checked out and they had a son and I went to bat for him. He ended up living with me and my XH for a summer while my SIL was treated for manic depression and PTSD (she was a police officer in Oakland and suffered some trauma). If I hadn't pushed, I am not sure what would have happened. It was like my SIL was WAITING for someone to notice that things were unbearable and say something. I know not everyone is like that, for her and her son, it was the absolutely right thing to do.

She and FIL are deeply frustrated. Unfortunately there's not much they - or any of us - can do.

This is...tricky. A's father is part Aboriginal. It's only a very small part - like 1/16, but it means that A is as well, of course. Because of the residual Stolen Generation issues, it's extremely difficult to take legal custody of a child with Aboriginal heritage. And I do understand why it's that way, but I think the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction now. A would have to be in a highly unstable environment - sexual abuse, extreme drug use, that kind of thing - for a judge to approve a custodial change. Plus, SIL is getting the tooth taken care of...just not in what I would consider the best way. It's a shiitty situation. Sad
