Pregnant after a Loss

Question about bedding (breathable bumpers ment)

Thought I might ask you ladies this. I will probably ask on the baby gear board too. We are going to be registering in a few weeks after our anatomy scan because we are having an early shower (out of state). Anyways, I am concerned about crib bumpers, and I am looking into the "breathable" bumpers and other alternatives. If I do go with a "safer" bumper, what to I register for as far as bedding? Do I still need a bedding set? Do I just choose sheets and a blanket? Sorry I am clueless, which is why I am starting to research now.

Re: Question about bedding (breathable bumpers ment)

  • I was originally going to just by bedding separates and a breathable bumper but the bedding we liked was only available as a set. I'm going to sell or toss the bumper that came with my set and purchase a breathable bumper.

  • I used the breathable when DD was starting to move around about 1 month old. When DD was able to roll herself around freely 6 months I put the original bumper on to prevent her from getting her limbs stuck in the slats.I still have regular bumper on.

Absolutly NO blankets. I use a  sleep sack for toddlers.

  • I think that it is entirely up to the person... If you are looking at bedding sets and you need everything except the bumper, it might be less money to just get the whole set and use the bumpers for something else... I have heard a couple of people on here talking about using the bumpers for pillows or something.

I didn't buy a set, or even a comforter/quilt.  It is entirely for decoration, and I decided to go with some cute blankets that we can leave out, but they are still usable for swaddling, etc.  So, I think it depends on what you personally are wanting.  :-)

I agree with this.  I never found a bedding set that I liked, so I just registered for a mattress pad, some sheets, and the breathable bumper.  When DD was cold, she was in a sleep sack.  Plus, you will most likely get 14 million blankets at your shower, so there's usually no need to register for them.

  • Yeah I definitely wasn't going to put blankets in the crib. I realize the ones that come in the set are more for decoration. I guess I want to make sure everything matches okay and wasn't sure if it's easy to find sheets, breathable bumpers, and crib skirts that match.

  • We just registered for sheets. I didn't see the point in getting a whole set when you shouldn't use anything that comes in them. But, I liked some of the sheets and luckily they're sold separately ;) DH also went through every bedding aisle and scanned every other pack of sheets. We're going to pick up a breathable bumper as well, soon... hopefully.

  • Answer from a PALer...unless you just want a bedding set to look pretty when the baby isn't in the bed...or you will have people coming in and out to see the nursery (including a done up crib)...I wouldn't even buy a bedding set. They are completely useless.

All the SIDS prevention info says that a baby needs to sleep on their back in a crib or bassinet with only a sheet on the mattress. They really don't even want a blanket but I've always used a jersey cotton blanket or you can also use a sleep sack. But you don't want to use the comforter or the bumper that comes with the set.

I'm just now thinking about a breathable bumper but only because as he's moving around the crib now, he gets legs hung outside the crib sometimes and then can't get them back in so he starts to panic and cry.

I'm glad I bought a really cheap bedding set but all I've used is the skirt (which I could have gotten separately in a color I would have liked better) and the sheet that came with it and I had to buy more sheets anyway.

  • I talked to my high risk OB last appt @ this bc I was very concerned also. I was planning on getting the breathable bumper but after talking to her she said you do not NEED a bumper anymore as the cribs are now made to standards where there is no danger of a baby's head fitting thru (unless you are getting a handmade crib or something). That said, she said it can't hurt to use a breathable one, but didn't recc the non-breathable ones. I am going to go without one and then if I feel like I need one I will get the breathable one. I am NOT going to use the non-breathable ones that come with my bedding sets as my sister had SIDS and I don't want to take any chances that my baby could roll up against it and not be able to get air.
