anyone cut their boys hair?

DS doesn't have a ton of hair, but what he has is getting long. I hate the idea of spending 15 bucks for a two minute  cut, plus he's going to have a fit. He hates strangers right now. I was thinking of cutting it myself, has anyone tried this? I'm a little worried he's going to come out looking girly

  • I've been cutting DS's hair for almost a year now. :)

I put his favourite video on and do a quick job of it.  Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it right, but I'm pretty quick with the scissors now. :)

  • Well ...

right when they turned 1, I gave Will a quick trim over his ears. (Only Alex had enough hair for a real cut.) It went fine.

A few months later, I tried to give Alex a little trim and it was a disaster. He whipped his head around at the wrong time and the stylist wasn't able to totally fix it. Oops!

We've found a kid-friendly salon that generally does a good job. But this morning the stylist gave up on Alex b/c he was in full hysterics and would not calm down, so she suggested I just trim over his ears when he's asleep. Considering he's a kid who wakes up screaming several times a night already I'm not so sure I want to do that, so I might just have to let him get shaggy ...

  • I cut Miles' hair, and it turned out a little uneven, but super cute.  Just make sure he's distracted.  DH played with him and read him books while I cut. :)

  • Yes.  It really helps if you have the right tools.  You need a pair of small, sharp scissors and preferably some sort of clippers.  I use my husband's multi-tool beard razor, which can cost $10-50 at Walmart or Target.  The clippers are a must to me around the ears and the neck.  You simply can not get the same results with regular scissors.

I find it fairly easy, but I've been clipping horses for over 15 years.

  • My son had a mullet so I trimmed the back up... its ok. I gave him a lollipop...  I will not trim the front myself...

  • I actually do DS's when he's in the bathtub.  I wait until the end, so he's not sitting in a tub full of wet hair clippings, but he's distracted by all his tub toys, it keeps the mess to a minimum, & I think it's just easier to do it when it's wet.
  • We took DS to hair 4 kids on his first birthday. $11 well spent! They strapped him into a big toy car in front of a TV with lots of other interesting things to look at. His hair wasn't long, but he didn't have a style and it wasn't even. He was good for a while, but even when he decided that he had enough the experienced stylists managed to bob and weave with him giving him a decent cut.

  • I took my ds for his first haircut a couple weeks ago and it was a complete disaster.  He was very upset, was swinging his head and crying the whole time.  His haircut definitely shows it.  I will be cutting his hair next time.

    LOVE this idea!

  • I have cut Cedric hair and will for awhile yet.  I just let DH hold him and distract him while I go to town.  I just use a comb and scissors.  Looks pretty good too:)
